  • Amazon says a VAT number is required to sell in Europe, and HMRC says a business not established in the UK has no registration threshold and must register from its first UK taxable supply.
  • If you own goods in the UK when you sell, for example FBA UK stock, you must register for UK VAT; Amazon is not responsible for customs duties and taxes on FBA inventory.

An Australian business can sell on Amazon.co.uk by opening a European seller account, which includes the UK store, from Seller Central. Amazon UK's Professional plan is 25 pounds a month excluding VAT, and the Individual plan is 0.75 pounds per item sold, also excluding VAT. Amazon says you will be required to provide a VAT number to sell in Europe. HMRC says a business not established in the UK has no VAT registration threshold and must register from its first taxable supply in the UK. This is general information, not tax advice.

How do you register for Amazon UK from Australia?

The UK is part of Amazon's European unified account, so you can list on Amazon.co.uk and expand to other European stores from the same account. If you already have an Amazon.com.au account, Amazon's guidance is to open Global Selling in Seller Central and create an account in the new region.

Amazon's US-site guide lists the UK store under Europe and links to UK category and product compliance pages. Amazon's public pages do not give a UK-specific registration checklist, so none is listed here. Expect the usual identity items: ID, business documents, a credit card, a bank account and tax information. Confirm the list on the registration screen.

The one item Amazon states plainly is the VAT number requirement for Europe. That is where the planning starts.

What does Amazon UK cost?

Item Amount Source
Professional plan 25 pounds a month excluding VAT, plus selling fees
Individual plan 0.75 pounds per item sold excluding VAT
Referral fees Most between 8% and 15% by category
Minimum referral fee 0.25 pounds per item in most categories

These are UK-site figures as of 19 October 2026. FBA UK fulfilment and storage fees are on separate Amazon UK pages and are not quoted here. The Australian Professional plan, for comparison, is A$49.95 a month excluding GST.

If you list in several European stores, Amazon says you may qualify for a discounted monthly Professional fee, and that European per-item fees are country-specific. Check which account type applies to your situation in Seller Central.

Do you need to register for UK VAT?

This depends on where your goods are when the customer buys, and on how you sell. Three points from HMRC:

  • A business not established in the UK is a non-established taxable person. HMRC's notice says the registration threshold for taxable supplies does not apply to such a business, so it must register from its first taxable supply in the UK, and has 30 days from that supply to tell HMRC.
  • If you own goods in the UK at the point of sale, you must register for VAT and account for VAT on sales made directly to customers.
  • Sellers do not have to register if they only sell goods that are outside the UK at the point of sale.

For goods sent from overseas in consignments of 135 pounds or less, sold directly to UK customers, HMRC says UK VAT is charged at the point of sale. HMRC notes that this page does not cover sales through online marketplaces, and refers to separate guidance for them. The treatment for marketplace sales is in that separate guidance, so read it and confirm with a UK tax adviser before you rely on this page for that point.

Check this first. UK VAT rules for overseas sellers have changed repeatedly and depend on your stock location and the value of consignments. Speak to a UK VAT adviser, or HMRC, before you list. Amazon itself recommends consulting tax and regulatory advisers.

How does FBA UK work for an Australian seller?

If you use FBA UK, your stock sits in the UK, which means you own goods in the UK at the point of sale. On HMRC's description above, that points to UK VAT registration.

Amazon's rules for FBA exports are plain. You or your provider must act as exporter of record and importer of record, and Amazon will not be responsible for customs duties and taxes associated with FBA inventory. Inventory that arrives with unpaid duty charges is returned to the sender. All logistics providers must be engaged directly by you.

That means a freight forwarder and customs broker for the Australia to UK leg. It also means paying import VAT and duty on arrival, and working out how to recover input VAT through your UK VAT return. Australia's own version of this concept is in importer of record for Amazon Australia.

Amazon's Europe Fulfilment Network lets stock sit in one inventory pool across European stores, with a fee for each order shipped outside the home marketplace. The UK is listed within the European account, but whether UK stock can serve EU customers after Brexit is a customs question this guide does not settle. Check in Seller Central.

How do you get paid?

Amazon's Currency Converter for Sellers supports 19 currencies including AUD and GBP. Amazon says you may only receive payment to a bank account in a country and currency the converter supports, and that it supports UK and US bank accounts as well as Eurozone ones. Amazon does not publish the conversion charge on that page, so build a buffer into your prices. Your VAT liability is payable to HMRC in pounds, so keep some pounds aside rather than converting everything back to Australian dollars.

What should you check before you launch?

  1. UK VAT. Decide whether you will hold stock in the UK, and get advice on registration, filing and import VAT.
  2. Trade mark. Brand Registry needs a trade mark issued by a country with a corresponding Amazon store. An Australian mark does not cover the UK.
  3. Product compliance. UK safety and labelling rules differ from Australia's. Amazon links to UK category and product compliance pages.
  4. Margin. Add freight, duty, import VAT cash flow, FBA fees and exchange rate cost, then compare with your Australian margin.
  5. Pilot. Start with a small batch.

For the domestic comparison see Amazon Australia vs Amazon US, which sets out how marketplaces differ, and GST for Amazon sellers for the Australian side. The overview is in Amazon global selling from Australia.
