Amazon.in charges sellers four main fees on every order: a referral fee(0% upwards, by category), a closing fee(Rs 2 to Rs 101, by price band and fulfilment channel), a weight handling fee(shipping, from Rs 39 per shipment on FBA), and, if you use FBA, pick and pack plus storage fees. Amazon adds 18% GST on top of all of these. This guide walks through each fee with Amazon's current published rates, checked on 16 September 2026, and ends with a worked example for a Rs 999 product.
The four fee types on Amazon.in
Amazon's fee page groups its charges into four buckets:
- Referral fee. A percentage of the selling price, set by product category.
- Closing fee. A flat amount per unit sold, set by price band and fulfilment channel.
- Weight handling fee. Amazon's shipping charge, set by weight and distance. Not charged on Self Ship.
- Other fees. Pick and pack, storage and removal fees if you use Fulfilment by Amazon(FBA), plus charges for optional programmes.
Amazon's own profit formula is: Profit = Selling price minus(Referral fee + Closing fee + Weight handling fee + Other fees + Product cost).
Two details matter. Closing fees are calculated on the item price including any shipping you charge the customer. And Amazon's published tables apply to the "Standard" level of the STEP programme, where every new seller starts; higher levels get small waivers.
Amazon referral fees by category
The referral fee is Amazon's commission. Since Amazon moved many categories to 0% for items priced up to Rs 1,000, the fee page now advertises "ZERO referral fee on over 12.5 crore products". Above Rs 1,000 the rate jumps, and a few categories such as mobiles and laptops carry a flat rate at every price.
| Category | Up to Rs 1,000 | Above Rs 1,000 |
|---|---|---|
| Apparel - Baby | 0% | 7% |
| Apparel - Men's T-shirts | 0% | 23% |
| Beauty - Makeup | 0% | 7% |
| Home Decor Products | 0% | 17% |
| Headphones and Earphones | 0% | 18% |
| Cases, Covers and Screen Guards | 0% | 25% |
| Fashion Jewellery | 0% | 22.5% |
| Mobile phones | 5% flat | 5% flat |
| Laptops | 6% flat | 6% flat |
| Pet Foods | 0% up to Rs 300, then 6.5% | 9.5% |
| Books | 0% up to Rs 250, 2% to Rs 500, 4% to Rs 1,000 | 13.5% |
The full list runs to several hundred sub-categories, so check your exact sub-category on Amazon's page rather than assuming the parent category rate.
Amazon closing fees
The closing fee is a fixed charge per unit. It depends on the price band and on how the order is fulfilled. Amazon raised closing fees from 7 September 2026, by Rs 1 for products up to Rs 500 and by Rs 3 for products above Rs 500, across FBA, Easy Ship and Seller Flex. The rates below are the post-increase rates.
| Price band(incl. shipping) | FBA(standard) | Easy Ship | Self Ship | Seller Flex |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rs 0 to 300 | Rs 27 | Rs 2 | Rs 20 | Rs 7 |
| Rs 301 to 500 | Rs 23 | Rs 23 | Rs 26 | Rs 13 |
| Rs 501 to 1,000 | Rs 30 | Rs 48 | Rs 51 | Rs 38 |
| Above Rs 1,000 | Rs 55(Rs 75 for select categories) | Rs 79 | Rs 101 | Rs 69 |
For FBA, some categories get a lower closing fee in the two lowest bands: Rs 21(Group A) or Rs 14(Group B) for items up to Rs 300, and Rs 19(Group C) or Rs 15(Group D) for Rs 301 to 500. Books and fashion jewellery are in Group B, for example.
Fulfilment fees: FBA vs Easy Ship vs Self Ship
Amazon offers three main ways to fulfil orders:
- FBA. Amazon stores, packs and delivers. You pay weight handling, pick and pack and storage. Prime badge included.
- Easy Ship. You store and pack, Amazon delivers. You pay a flat weight handling fee. Prime by invite only.
- Self Ship. You store, pack and deliver. Amazon charges no shipping fee; you pay your courier.
Weight handling is charged per shipment on actual or volumetric weight(L x B x H in cm, divided by 5,000), whichever is higher. Rates below are for the Standard STEP level, effective 16 March 2026.
| Weight slab | FBA regional | FBA national | Easy Ship(flat) |
|---|---|---|---|
| First 500 g | Rs 39 | Rs 65 | Rs 55 |
| 500 g to 1 kg | Rs 54 | Rs 85 | Rs 75 |
| 1 kg to 2 kg | Rs 78 | Rs 122 | Rs 112 |
| Each extra kg after 2 kg | Rs 24 | Rs 34 | Rs 34 |
| Each extra kg after 5 kg | Rs 13 | Rs 18 | Rs 18 |
"Regional" means within one of Amazon's four shipping regions; "national" means across regions. Heavy and bulky items(over 22.5 kg, any side over 183 cm, or goods like fridges and sofas) use a separate FBA card starting at Rs 110 local, Rs 160 regional and Rs 300 national for the first 12 kg.
Storage and other FBA charges
If you use FBA, three more charges apply:
- Pick and pack: Rs 17 per unit for standard items up to 1 kg, Rs 5 for each extra kg up to 5 kg, then Rs 2 per extra 5 kg. Heavy and bulky items: Rs 26 per unit.
- Storage: Rs 50 per cubic foot per month.
- Removal: Rs 10 per unit(standard shipping) or Rs 30(expedited) for standard size; Rs 100 for heavy and bulky. New sellers can try FBA "at no additional cost for 1st 3 months/100 units".
GST on Amazon seller fees
Every fee above is quoted before tax. Amazon states: "We will apply 18%(eighteen percent) GST to all fees displayed above". GST-registered sellers can normally claim it as input tax credit; ask your accountant. For cash-flow planning, add 18% to every fee line.
Worked example: selling a Rs 999 product
Assumptions(chosen to keep the maths clear; change them for your product):
- Category: Pet Foods, referral fee 6.5% for items priced Rs 300 to 1,000. Many other categories are 0% at this price, which would remove the referral line entirely.
- Selling price Rs 999 with free shipping, so the closing fee band is Rs 501 to 1,000.
- Packed weight 800 g, so the 500 g to 1 kg slab applies.
- Seller at Standard STEP level. FBA order delivered regionally.
- Product cost, storage, ads and returns are excluded.
FBA: - Referral fee: 6.5% of Rs 999 = Rs 64.94 - Closing fee(FBA, Rs 501 to 1,000): Rs 30 - Weight handling(500 g to 1 kg, regional): Rs 54 - Pick and pack: Rs 17 - Subtotal: Rs 165.94. GST at 18%: Rs 29.87. Total Amazon fees: Rs 195.81 - Left after fees: Rs 803.19
Easy Ship: - Referral Rs 64.94 + closing Rs 48 + weight handling Rs 75 = Rs 187.94. GST Rs 33.83. Total Rs 221.77 - Left after fees: Rs 777.23
Self Ship: - Referral Rs 64.94 + closing Rs 51 = Rs 115.94. GST Rs 20.87. Total Rs 136.81 - Left after fees: Rs 862.19, before you pay your own courier.
Hidden costs to budget for
Costs that do not appear in the headline tables:
- Returns and refunds. Amazon's STEP page confirms a refund fee exists, because it offers a "Refund Fee Waiver Upto INR.10" at Standard level and "Upto INR.30" at Advanced and Premium. The full refund fee rate is not published on Amazon's public pages; check Seller Central for your category.
- Long-term storage. A long-term storage fee exists(Premium STEP sellers get "20% off" it), but the public fee page does not list the rate.
- Advertising. Sponsored Products is pay-per-click and sits outside the fee schedule. For many sellers it is the largest cost after the product itself.
- Optional programmes such as Launchpad or Business Advisory carry their own charges.
- Packaging, inbound freight to the fulfilment centre, removal fees and the 18% GST on every line.
How to use Amazon's fee calculator
Amazon provides a free Revenue Calculator at https://sellercentral.amazon.in/fba/profitabilitycalculator/index?lang=en_IN. You need a Seller Central login. Search for your ASIN or a similar product, enter price, product cost, weight and dimensions, and compare FBA against your own fulfilment. Amazon's caveat: "Results provided by the Revenue Calculator are estimates only. Actuals costs may vary". Confirm real fees from your settlement reports after the first few orders.
