What is Sponsored Products?

Sponsored Products are Amazon's cost-per-click ads that show an individual product listing in search results and on product detail pages.

Sponsored Products is the entry-level and highest-volume ad type on Amazon. Each ad promotes one ASIN and looks almost identical to an organic search result, with a small "Sponsored" label. Ads appear at the top, middle and bottom of search results, in carousels on product detail pages and, increasingly, on other Amazon-owned surfaces. For most Indian sellers it is where advertising starts and where most of the budget stays.

How Sponsored Products work

Amazon states that Sponsored Products are available to professional sellers, vendors, book vendors, KDP authors and agencies; Brand Registry is not required. There is no set-up fee or minimum spend; you pay per click on a cost-per-click basis, and you set a daily budget that Amazon may exceed on a given day but balances over the month.

Targeting comes in two forms. Automatic targeting lets Amazon match the ad to search terms and products it judges similar to your listing, based on your title, bullets and category. Manual targeting lets you choose keywords (in broad, phrase or exact match) or specific products, categories and brands to appear against. Bids can be modified by placement (top of search, rest of search, product pages) and by a bidding strategy: fixed, dynamic down only, or dynamic up and down.

Worked example: a seller launches a ₹799 lunch box with a ₹500 daily budget on an automatic campaign. In week one it records 22,000 impressions, 110 clicks at an average ₹7 CPC (₹770 spend) and 9 orders worth ₹7,191, so ACoS is about 11%. The search term report then reveals which queries produced the orders, which become exact-match keywords in a manual campaign.

Why Sponsored Products matter for sellers

A new listing has no sales history, so it ranks nowhere organically. Sponsored Products buys the first impressions and orders that start organic ranking, and it defends existing rank on high-intent queries where competitors advertise. Because the ad uses the listing itself, the same image, price and rating drive both the ad and the organic result, so listing quality has an outsized effect on ad efficiency.

How to run Sponsored Products well

  • Start with automatic plus manual. Use the automatic campaign for discovery and move proven search terms into manual exact campaigns.
  • One product family per campaign so budgets and bids are not shared between unrelated ASINs.
  • Add negative keywords every week from the search term report.
  • Set bids from the margin. Break-even ACoS decides the maximum bid, not the suggested bid.
  • Review placements monthly and shift adjustments towards the placement with the best conversion rate.

Frequently asked questions

What does Sponsored Products mean?

Sponsored Products is Amazon's cost-per-click ad format that promotes a single product listing in search results and on product detail pages. The ad looks like an organic result with a Sponsored label, and you pay only when a shopper clicks it.

Do I need Brand Registry for Sponsored Products?

No. Amazon makes Sponsored Products available to any professional seller, vendor or agency. Brand Registry is required for Sponsored Brands and Sponsored Display, not for Sponsored Products.

What is the minimum budget for Sponsored Products in India?

Amazon sets no monthly minimum or upfront fee; you set your own daily budget and pay per click. As of September 2026, sellers typically start small, around a few hundred rupees a day per campaign, and scale once the search term report shows converting queries.
