Amazon PPC Launch Strategy for a New Product in Australia: Phases, Budget Caps and Exit Rules

By Blooprint team · Published 20 October 2026 · 6 min read

Key takeaways

  • Launch ads work only once the listing is live, buyable, priced competitively and in stock; paid clicks to a weak page just cost money.
  • Run launch in phases: research and discovery first, then proven keywords, then profit control, with a fixed budget cap and a review date set before you start.
  • Amazon's FBA New Selection programme cuts the referral fee to 5% for 120 days on eligible new-to-FBA parent ASINs, which can fund part of a launch.
  • Brand Registry sellers on Amazon.com.au can get a A$75 Sponsored ads credit under the New Seller Incentive, subject to eligibility and Amazon's terms.

To launch a new product with Amazon PPC in Australia, get the listing, price and stock right first, then run Sponsored Products in phases: broad discovery to find the searches that convert, then focused campaigns on proven keywords, then profit control with a fixed budget cap and review date. Amazon requires an active Professional seller account for ads. Amazon also runs new-product incentives, such as a 5% referral fee for 120 days under FBA New Selection, that change launch maths.

What must be ready before you spend on ads?

Ads send traffic. They do not fix a listing. Before the first click, check:

  • The offer is buyable. Sponsored Products needs Featured Offer eligibility, so a listing without the Featured Offer will not serve ads. Read how to win the Buy Box.
  • Stock covers the launch. Run out mid-campaign and you pay for lost momentum. With FBA, plan inbound time; Amazon says stock is typically available within three working days of delivery.
  • The listing is complete. Title, images, bullet points and, if you are Brand Registered, A+ Content. See listing optimisation and A+ Content.
  • Price and margin are known. Work out break-even ACoS from your unit profit. The budget guide shows the method.
  • Compliance is done. Restricted or unapproved products will not sell, so do not advertise them.

Which Amazon launch incentives can reduce the cost?

Amazon publishes several programmes. All have eligibility rules, so read the current page before you count on one.

Programme What Amazon says Source
FBA New Selection Referral fee cut to 5% for 120 days from the buyable date for new-to-FBA parent ASINs, capped at 100 standard-size or 50 oversize units per parent ASIN sell.amazon.com.au new selection page
FBA New Selection storage First 30 units per parent ASIN get no storage fees for 90 days and free removal within 180 days same page
Brand Registry New Seller Incentive 5% credit on referral fees for the first A$1,500,000 of eligible branded sales, up to A$75,000, plus a A$75 credit for Sponsored ads sell.amazon.com.au brand registry page
Vine Up to 30 reviews per product; free for up to 2 units, A$100 for 3 to 10 units, A$230 for 11 to 30 units per parent product sell.amazon.com.au Vine page

The New Selection programme covers listings buyable on or after 28 October 2025, and from 1 December 2025 it requires an Inventory Performance Index of 300 or more over the trailing six months; new sellers are auto-enrolled if the first FBA shipment is received within 90 days of the first buyable offer. The reduced referral fee, and the units cap on it, is described on that page. The Brand Registry incentive, including the A$75 Sponsored ads credit, is described on the Brand Registry page. Vine's per-product pricing and eligibility (Professional plan, eligible FBA offers, brand registered in Australia, under 30 reviews) are on its page. See the Vine guide for detail.

What does a phased launch look like?

Time periods below are a framework, not an Amazon rule. Amazon publishes no official launch schedule, so set your own review dates.

Phase 1: Discovery (roughly weeks 1 to 2)

Goal: find which searches get clicks and sales for this product.

  1. Build one automatic Sponsored Products campaign for the product and let Amazon match search terms.
  2. Add a manual campaign with your best researched keywords, using broad and phrase match types. Our keyword research guide shows where to find terms.
  3. Bid high enough to win impressions. Amazon's Prime Day advice for sellers suggests setting bids to the maximum you are willing to pay for a click during heavy-competition periods; for a launch, the same logic applies but within your cap.
  4. Accept a higher ACoS here. You are buying data.

Phase 2: Proven terms (roughly weeks 3 to 6)

Goal: move spend to what converts.

  1. Open the search term report. Copy converting search terms into a manual campaign as exact match.
  2. Add clicked-but-never-sold terms as negative keywords after a fair sample of clicks.
  3. Separate branded, category and competitor-ASIN targeting so you can see each one's results. See campaign structure.
  4. Lower bids on terms with clicks and no sales; raise them on terms that sell at or below target ACoS. Bidding strategy is covered separately.

Phase 3: Profit control (week 6 onward)

Goal: bring ACoS to target and hold it.

  1. Cut campaigns that missed targets after your agreed click count.
  2. Add Sponsored Brands if you are Brand Registered and have several products.
  3. Watch organic rank and total sales, not only ad-attributed sales. A falling TACoS with steady total sales is the sign the launch worked.

How much should you cap launch spend at?

Set a total launch budget before you start, say as a share of your first inventory order, and a date to review. Everything here is your decision, not Amazon's. As an illustration only: if a unit makes A$12 before ads, a launch that allows a loss of A$4 a unit on the first 150 ad-driven sales has a launch cost of A$600, and you write that number down in advance. Amazon lists a recommended minimum daily budget of 15 in local currency for Australia (A$15; confirm it in your ads console), which gives you a floor, not a plan.

How do you know the launch is working?

Look at four things together each week, not ad-attributed sales alone. First, impressions and click-through rate on your main terms, which show whether the listing is being found and is attractive in results. Second, conversion rate from click to order, which shows whether the page, price and reviews do their job. Third, total sales including organic, because a launch that works lifts organic orders over time. Fourth, ACoS against your break-even figure, so you know whether each ad-driven sale is paid for. If clicks are high and orders are low, fix the listing or price before touching bids. If orders are fine and ACoS is high, trim bids and negatives.

What goes wrong on launches?

  • Advertising before reviews and content exist. Shoppers who click a listing with no reviews and thin content often leave. Use Vine if eligible and read the reviews policy; never buy or incentivise reviews outside Amazon's programmes.
  • Too many keywords on too little budget. Each gets a handful of clicks.
  • Judging too early. Three days is noise.
  • Stock-outs. Pause or cut budget before stock runs out.
  • Never exiting the launch phase. Launch bidding is meant to end. Set the date.

FAQ

How long should an Amazon PPC launch last? Amazon sets no official length. Many sellers use four to eight weeks, then move to profit targets. Choose your own review dates based on click volume per keyword, and write them down before you start so the launch has an end.

How much should I spend to launch a product on Amazon Australia? Work backwards from unit profit and a sales goal, and cap the total in advance. Amazon lists a recommended minimum daily budget of 15 in local currency for Australia (A$15; confirm in your ads console). The budget guide has a worked example.

Should I use automatic or manual campaigns for a launch? Both. Automatic finds search terms you did not think of, and manual lets you control bids on the keywords you chose. Move converting automatic terms into manual exact match once you have data.

Can I run ads before I have any reviews? You can, but conversion is usually weaker. Check Vine eligibility and make sure images and content are strong first. Amazon's Vine page lists eligibility including the Professional plan and under 30 reviews.

Do I need Brand Registry to launch with ads? Not for Sponsored Products. Amazon says Sponsored Brands and Stores need Brand Registry, and the Brand Registry New Seller Incentive includes a A$75 Sponsored ads credit for eligible sellers.

What ACoS should I accept during launch? A higher one than in steady state, by choice. Set it from your break-even ACoS and your launch budget cap, not from a general benchmark. Our ACoS guide explains the targets.

Launch with a cap and a review date

Write the cap, the phases and the review dates down, then run the plan and read the search term report weekly. If you would rather hand the launch to specialists, Blooprint's Amazon Ads management service can plan and run it. More guides sit in the Australia hub.
