How to Win the Buy Box on Amazon Australia: Eligibility, Price, Fulfilment, Metrics and What to Do When You Lose It

By Blooprint team ยท Published 20 October 2026 ยท 8 min read

Key takeaways

  • Amazon's seller pages call the Buy Box the 'featured offer', the one customers can add to cart or buy now on a detail page.
  • Amazon does not publish the Buy Box formula for Australia, so work the levers you control: landed price, fulfilment, stock and seller metrics.
  • Amazon's published targets are order defect rate under 1%, pre-fulfilment cancel rate under 2.5% and late shipment rate under 4%.
  • Sponsored Products ads only run when your offer is eligible to be the featured offer, so losing it also stops your ad spend working.

To win the Buy Box on Amazon Australia, you need an offer that Amazon treats as eligible, then a price, delivery promise, stock level and set of seller metrics that beat the other offers on the same listing. Amazon's own seller pages do not use the term "Buy Box". They call it the featured offer, the one on the detail page that customers can add to their cart or buy now. Amazon does not publish a formula or weightings for Australia. What it does publish are performance targets: order defect rate under 1%, pre-fulfilment cancel rate under 2.5% and late shipment rate under 4%.

This guide is about winning and keeping the featured offer on listings you sell. Brand control of a detail page is a separate topic, covered in Amazon Brand Registry in Australia. More Amazon.com.au guides are on the Amazon Australia hub. The general term is explained in the Buy Box glossary entry.

What is the Buy Box on Amazon.com.au?

When several sellers offer the same product, Amazon shows one offer in the main purchase panel. That is the Buy Box, or featured offer. The other sellers appear under "other offers", the same product sold by multiple sellers with different prices, shipping options and so on. Most buyers click the main button without opening the other offers, so the featured offer takes the bulk of sales on a shared listing.

Two situations matter:

  • You are the only seller on the listing (your own brand, private label). You usually hold the featured offer by default if you are eligible and in stock. Competition comes from other products, not other sellers.
  • You share the listing (wholesale, retail arbitrage, resellers on your brand). Now the Buy Box is a daily contest, and a hijacker or a lower-priced reseller can take it.

If your whole business is reselling other brands, read Amazon wholesale in Australia before you count on the Buy Box. You will compete with every other approved reseller.

What do you need to be eligible?

Eligibility comes before any competition. Amazon's public pages give these building blocks.

Item What Amazon publishes Source
Selling plan Professional plan is A$49.95 per month excluding GST plus selling fees https://sell.amazon.com.au/pricing
Ads link Sponsored Products need your offer to be eligible to be the featured offer https://sell.amazon.com.au/advertising
Metrics ODR under 1%, cancel rate under 2.5%, late shipment under 4% https://sell.amazon.com.au/beginners-guide

Amazon does not publish a complete Australian eligibility checklist on public pages. The detailed rules sit inside Seller Central. If an offer is not eligible, Seller Central usually shows a message on the listing, and Seller Support can confirm the reason when you open a case.

Practical checks before you compete:

  1. The offer is active, priced and has stock.
  2. Your account health is not flagged. See Amazon account health rating in Australia.
  3. You are selling New condition. Amazon directs used and refurbished stock through Amazon Renewed.
  4. You have no listing or compliance warning on that ASIN.

What factors decide who gets the Buy Box?

Amazon says Sponsored Products need Featured Offer eligibility, so the Buy Box matters directly to advertisers. But Amazon does not publish the ranking factors for Australia, so be sceptical of any agency claiming exact weightings. The factors sellers consistently work on are these. Treat them as levers, not a formula.

  • Landed price. The item price plus delivery. Amazon shows free delivery on eligible orders over A$59 to all Amazon.com.au customers, which affects how your offer compares.
  • Fulfilment method. FBA offers carry the Prime delivery promise. Amazon says the FBA fee covers picking, packing, shipping, customer service and returns. Merchant-fulfilled offers must meet the same delivery expectations from your own stock.
  • Seller performance. The ODR, cancellation and late shipment targets above.
  • Stock depth. An offer that keeps going out of stock loses the position to those that do not.
  • Delivery speed and reliability. Accurate handling times, valid tracking and Australia Post or carrier performance.

Check Amazon FBA vs FBM in Australia if you are deciding between the two for a shared listing.

How do you win it step by step?

  1. Fix the account first. Work on metrics before price. A low price does not rescue an offer that is not eligible.
  2. Choose the fulfilment route. For shared listings, FBA is the usual route to a competitive delivery promise because Amazon handles delivery and returns. Check FBA costs in Amazon Australia FBA fees.
  3. Set a price floor from your costs. Work out your landed cost, referral fee, FBA fee and GST position, then set a minimum price you will not go under. Referral fees range by category from 5% to 15% depending on price tier.
  4. Price against the right offers. Compare landed price with the other sellers' landed price, not item price alone.
  5. Keep stock in. Use reorder points. Stockouts hand the Buy Box to competitors and can lose your position for days.
  6. Reprice carefully. Automated repricing tools can help, but a race to the bottom destroys margin. Cap the floor.
  7. Watch the listing. Review the "other offers" count weekly to catch new sellers early.

Check this first. Do the sums at the floor price. If your net margin is zero or negative at the price needed to win, do not chase the Buy Box on that listing. Winning unprofitable sales is not a win.

Worked example: should you cut price to win?

This is illustrative. Say you resell a toy in the Toys and Games category, which carries a 12% referral fee. Your landed cost is A$18.00 excluding GST. A competitor holds the Buy Box at A$29.00. Another seller sits at A$28.00.

Step At A$29.00 At A$27.50
Referral fee at 12% A$3.48 A$3.30
FBA fee (illustrative, a parcel band from the fee table) A$7.34 A$7.34
Landed cost A$18.00 A$18.00
Margin before GST and ads A$0.18 A$(1.14)

At A$29.00 you earn almost nothing, and at A$27.50 you lose money before ads. The right decision is to let the Buy Box go on this listing unless you have a cheaper source. The FBA figure here is the A$7.34 band for a parcel of up to 250 g with item price A$13 or more, excluding GST. Your own item will sit in a different band, so look yours up. GST treatment of your costs depends on your registration; confirm with the ATO or a registered tax agent. This is general information, not tax advice.

Why did I lose the Buy Box?

Work through this list in order.

  1. Another seller undercut your landed price. Check the offers list.
  2. You went out of stock, even briefly.
  3. A metric slipped. Open Account Health and check ODR, cancellations and late shipments against the targets above.
  4. A listing or compliance flag. Check notifications and the listing's status.
  5. A price error. A decimal slip can make Amazon hide the offer.
  6. A hijacker or unauthorised reseller is on your branded listing. Brand owners can report violations through Brand Registry. See Amazon IP complaints in Australia.
  7. A temporary swing. Offers can rotate for reasons Amazon does not publish. Give it a day or two before you cut price.

If none of these fits, open a case with Seller Support and ask whether your offer is eligible for the featured offer. Keep your ASIN, SKU and a screenshot ready.

How does the Buy Box affect advertising?

Amazon states that Sponsored Products need the offer to be eligible to be the featured offer. If you lose eligibility, ads for that product can stop serving, while budget may flow to other products. Check ad performance after any stock-out or price change. Use Amazon Sponsored Products in Australia for campaign setup. Do not raise bids to compensate for a lost Buy Box. Fix the cause first.

FAQ

Does Amazon Australia call it the Buy Box? Amazon's seller pages use "featured offer" for the offer customers can add to cart or buy now, and "other offers" for the rest. Sellers and tools still say Buy Box, and Amazon's own ads page refers to Featured Offer eligibility.

Does FBA guarantee the Buy Box? No. FBA gives you Amazon's delivery promise and handles customer service and returns, which helps. But price, stock and metrics still matter, and Amazon does not guarantee the featured offer to any seller.

Do I need a Professional plan to win the Buy Box? Amazon's public pages do not state this as a Buy Box rule. The Professional plan is A$49.95 per month excluding GST and is required for all Amazon Ads. Check your account's eligibility in Seller Central.

Should I always be the cheapest seller? No. Amazon compares more than item price, and a lowest-price race can leave you unprofitable. Set a floor price from your costs, hold it, and win on delivery, stock and metrics where you can.

How long does it take to win the Buy Box on a new listing? Amazon does not publish a timeline for Australia. New offers can take time to become eligible or to win a share. Keep stock, price and metrics stable and check Seller Central for any eligibility message rather than guessing.

Can I lose the Buy Box to Amazon itself? On some listings Amazon is also a seller. Amazon does not publish how it weighs its own offer. If Amazon is on your listing, compete on price and availability, or sell products where you are the only seller.

What can I do about a reseller undercutting my brand? If you own the brand and are in Brand Registry, use Report a Violation for infringement. If the seller is authorised and legitimate, you can change your wholesale terms or minimum advertised price policy, which is a commercial decision outside Amazon.
