Wholesale on Amazon Australia: Authorised Supply, Brand Approval and Buy Box Competition

By Blooprint team ยท Published 20 October 2026 ยท 6 min read

Key takeaways

  • Wholesale on Amazon Australia means buying branded stock from the brand or an authorised distributor and reselling it; for some brands you must be an authorised reseller to list at all.
  • Amazon publishes its brand-approval document rules inside Seller Central, not on its public pages, so confirm what a brand or category needs there before buying stock.
  • You will usually share the Buy Box with other sellers of the same ASIN, so price and fulfilment decide who wins the sale.
  • On an A$100 item bought at A$70 excluding GST, Amazon's referral fee and an FBA parcel fee leave roughly A$3.69 before ads, storage, prep and inbound costs.

Wholesale on Amazon Australia means buying stock of an existing brand from the brand or an authorised distributor, then listing it against the existing product page (ASIN) and fulfilling through FBA or yourself. The hard parts are access and margin. Amazon says you may need to be an authorised reseller to list some brand names and branded products, and you will usually compete for the Buy Box with other sellers of the same product. Amazon's own public pages do not publish the document checklist for brand approval; that is inside Seller Central. This page is accurate as of October 2026.

What is wholesale, and how is it different from private label?

In wholesale, the brand belongs to someone else. You add no new product and no new listing. You are one more seller on a page that already exists.

Wholesale Private label
Brand owner The manufacturer You
Listing Shared ASIN Your ASIN
Main risk Brand approval, price competition Stock, compliance, trade mark
Main edge Established demand Control and margin

For the brand-owner route, read private label on Amazon Australia. For choosing between products, see what to sell on Amazon Australia.

What does Amazon require to sell someone else's brand?

Amazon's seller page says that to sell branded products protected by copyright, trademark or patent, you must be the legal owner of the brand or an authorised reseller. The product guide says the same: "You'll also need to be an authorised reseller to be able to list some brand names and branded products". Some products need Amazon's prior approval, and restricted categories can carry performance checks, extra fees or qualifications.

What Amazon does not say on its public pages: which document it accepts for a given brand, how many invoices it wants, or how long a decision takes. Seller forum threads describe invoices being rejected, but forum posts are experiences, not rules. Treat the approval screen in Seller Central as the source for what to submit.

How do you find a legitimate supplier?

Your supply chain is what Amazon is checking. A short ladder, best first:

  1. The brand itself. Ask for a trade account or wholesale terms.
  2. The brand's Australian distributor. Ask the brand who its authorised distributors are, in writing.
  3. A distributor's authorised stockist. Weaker, since each hop adds risk.
  4. Retail stock or liquidation lots. Highest risk of rejection and of authenticity complaints.

Questions to put to the supplier before paying:

  • Are you an authorised distributor of this brand in Australia, and can you show it?
  • Will you issue a proper tax invoice with your ABN, your business name, the quantity, the product description and the date? See Amazon Australia tax invoices.
  • Does the brand restrict resale on marketplaces?
  • Are the products new, Australian-market stock, with full warranty?

Keep every invoice. Amazon may ask for them later, not only at approval. An invoice from a business that is itself not authorised, or a retail receipt, is the kind of document sellers report being refused, though Amazon's public pages do not set the rule.

Which gating applies: brand, category or both?

Two different gates can apply, and they are separate:

  • Category approval. Some categories need approval or a Professional plan. Grocery is named as needing prior approval. See category approval.
  • Brand approval. Brand-owner or authorised-reseller proof for specific brands.

Even if both open, brands can restrict how they appear on Amazon. Brand Registry owners can report listings they believe infringe; see IP complaints. Selling a brand you cannot show supply for risks complaints, and complaints reach your account health. See account health rating.

How does Buy Box competition work in wholesale?

On a shared ASIN, only one offer holds the Buy Box at a time, and most sales happen from it. See Buy Box and how to win the Buy Box in Australia. In wholesale, expect:

  • Other resellers and sometimes the brand itself on the same listing.
  • Price changes by repricers within hours.
  • FBA offers having an advantage on Prime eligibility. Amazon says FBA is the easiest way to get Prime badge eligibility for most offers.

You cannot control the Buy Box, only your price, fulfilment, stock and account health. If the brand sells direct on the same page at a price you cannot match, the listing is not for you.

What is the real margin on wholesale?

Worked example (illustrative). You buy a small Consumer Electronics item and sell it at A$100.00 including GST. Your cost is A$70.00 excluding GST. It weighs 800 g and goes in FBA.

Line A$ Basis
Sale price including GST 100.00 Illustrative
Less GST at 10% (one-eleventh) 9.09 Assumed standard rate
Revenue excluding GST 90.91
Referral fee, 8% of A$100.00 8.00 Consumer Electronics rate
FBA fulfilment, parcel 501-1,000 g 9.22 A$13+ column, excluding GST
Your cost of goods 70.00 Illustrative
Left before ads, storage, prep, inbound 3.69 About 3.7% of the sale price

Two cautions on that table. First, the referral fee is a percentage of the total sales price and is stated without a GST basis on the pricing table, while Amazon says fees are exclusive of GST, so how it appears on your invoices is a question for your tax agent; see GST on Amazon seller fees. Second, some categories carry different rates: Electronics Accessories is 13.5%. Check yours in referral fees by category.

Storage runs from A$37.00 per cubic metre in January to September to A$51.80 in October to December, excluding GST. Slow wholesale stock also faces the aged-inventory charge from 271 days.

Wholesale tends to work when your cost is far below the Buy Box price, which is why distributors and brands with real supply terms do better than resellers buying at retail. It tends to fail on well-known, heavily discounted brands. Use the FBA calculator before the first order.

Step by step: starting a wholesale account

  1. Register and verify; see Amazon Australia seller registration.
  2. Choose a plan; Professional is A$49.95 a month excluding GST, and deals and ads need Professional.
  3. Identify two or three brands you can legitimately source.
  4. Get supplier terms and a sample invoice.
  5. Request brand or category approval in Seller Central and submit what Seller Central asks for.
  6. Order a small first quantity.
  7. Send stock in under FBA or ship it yourself; see Amazon FBA in Australia.

Check this first. Do not buy a pallet before approval comes through. Approval does not move with the stock.

FAQ

Can I sell branded products on Amazon Australia? Yes, if you own the brand or are an authorised reseller where required. Some brands and categories need prior approval. Amazon decides case by case inside Seller Central, so confirm before ordering stock.

What invoices does Amazon accept for brand approval? Amazon's public Australian pages do not publish an invoice checklist; the requirements appear inside Seller Central. Keep a tax invoice from the brand or an authorised distributor, with its business details and product lines, and do not alter documents.

Do I need a letter of authorisation from the brand? Some brands issue one and some sellers report it helping, but Amazon's public pages do not make it a universal rule. Ask the brand which distributors it authorises and whether it provides written authority.

Is retail arbitrage allowed on Amazon Australia? Amazon's public pages require new products and authorised resale for some brands. It does not describe retail arbitrage by name. Retail stock is the hardest to document, so brand approval and complaints are the main risks.

Will I always share the Buy Box? Usually, on a shared listing, though you may be the only seller on a niche one. The Buy Box rotates or goes to one offer based on price, fulfilment and seller performance. See Buy Box in Australia.

Can the brand remove me from its listing? Brand owners enrolled in Brand Registry can report violations, and Project Zero lets enrolled brands remove listings they judge counterfeit. Documented supply from an authorised source is your protection.
