Amazon FBA in Australia works like this: you list a product as Fulfilment by Amazon, prepare it to Amazon's guidelines, send it to the fulfilment centres Amazon assigns, and from then on Amazon stores it, picks, packs and ships each order, and handles customer service and returns. You pay the selling plan, a referral fee per item, a per-unit fulfilment fee and monthly storage. As of October 2026 there is no FBA subscription, carrier contract or minimum inventory requirement.

Amazon FBA Australia Guide 2026: How Fulfilment by Amazon Works from Listing to Returns
By Blooprint team ยท Published 20 October 2026 ยท 6 min read
Key takeaways
- FBA has no subscription, carrier contract or minimum stock; you pay A$49.95 a month for the Professional plan plus per-unit fees, all excluding GST, and Amazon handles picking, packing and delivery.
- Four steps start an FBA product: set up the account, create the listing as FBA, prep to Amazon's guidelines, then ship stock to the fulfilment centres your shipping plan names.
- Stock is typically scanned and available for sale within three working days of delivery, and FBA does not serve postcodes 2898, 2899, 4875, 6798 and 6799.
- Fees, capacity limits and carton rules matter as much as the process: storage is billed per cubic metre and Amazon may cap how much stock you can send based on your IPI.

How does FBA work step by step?
Amazon's own sequence has four steps:
- Set up your account. Register as a seller, or log in to Seller Central if you already sell. See how to register as an Amazon Australia seller.
- Create listings. When you add a product you specify that it is FBA inventory.
- Prepare the products. Follow Amazon's packing guidelines and its shipping and routing requirements.
- Ship to Amazon. Create a shipping plan, print the Amazon shipment ID labels and send the shipments to the fulfilment centres.
After receipt, an order placed by a customer is picked, packed and shipped by Amazon. The fulfilment fee covers picking, packing, shipping, customer service and returns handling, and Amazon says all shipping costs are included.
What do you need before you send the first unit?
You need an active selling account, a product that is allowed in FBA, and a listing with a valid product identifier. Most sellers use the Professional plan, which costs A$49.95 a month excluding GST plus selling fees. Amazon suggests the Individual plan for fewer than 50 items a month and Professional above that. The Individual vs Professional comparison covers that choice.
Check three eligibility points early:
- Size and weight. Products larger than 116 x 116 x 102 cm or heavier than 23 kg are prohibited from FBA, with listed exceptions for certain TVs and monitors.
- Dangerous goods and restricted products. Batteries, aerosols, flammables and similar items need classification. See Amazon dangerous goods in Australia and restricted products.
- Compliance. Electrical, children's and other regulated goods must meet Australian rules before you list them. See product safety on Amazon Australia.
Check this first. Amazon publishes some FBA detail, such as carton limits, labelling specifications and capacity limits, inside Seller Central rather than on public pages. We link to public pages where they exist and say plainly when they do not.
Which fulfilment centre gets your stock?
Amazon's public FBA page says its Australian centres are in Melbourne, Sydney, Perth and Brisbane, and that your shipping plan determines which one you use. You do not pick the destination freely. The shipping plan, and the inbound placement option you choose, decide how many locations your units are split across. See Amazon fulfilment centres in Australia for what Amazon publishes about locations.
What is the Send to Amazon process?
Send to Amazon is the Seller Central workflow where you choose products and quantities, say who prepares and labels them, pick a placement option, print labels and book or confirm carriers. The mechanics, and what Amazon does and does not publish about cartons and pallets, are on Send to Amazon shipments in Australia. Prep and barcode rules are on FBA prep and labelling in Australia.
Three delivery routes exist for inbound stock:
| Route | How it works | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Your own carrier | You book the freight or courier and deliver to the assigned centre | Seller Central workflow |
| Partnered Carrier (domestic) | A carrier collects a small parcel delivery from an eligible Australian location and drops it at a centre, for a per-box fee | https://sell.amazon.com.au/fulfilment-by-amazon |
| Amazon SEND | Ships eligible FBA or MCF stock from China to Australian centres via a partnered carrier; you pay the carrier directly; dangerous goods are prohibited | https://sell.amazon.com.au/amazon-send |
Importing from China adds customs and GST steps that are not part of FBA itself. See shipping from China to Amazon FBA Australia, import GST and duty and importer of record.
How long before FBA stock can be sold?
Amazon says inventory is typically scanned and made available for sale within three working days of delivery to the centre. That is typical, not guaranteed. Peak periods and shipments with labelling errors can take longer, so do not plan a launch date to the day. You can follow a shipment in the Shipping Queue and on the Shipment Summary page in Seller Central.
What does FBA cost in Australia?
FBA costs are layered, and every Amazon rate below excludes GST:
- Selling plan: A$49.95 a month (Professional) or A$0.99 a unit (Individual).
- Referral fee: a percentage of the sale by category. See Amazon Australia referral fees by category.
- Fulfilment fee: per unit by size tier, weight and whether the item sells above or below A$13. See Amazon Australia FBA fees.
- Storage: A$37.00 per cubic metre per month for standard-size items from January to September and A$51.80 from October to December. See Amazon Australia storage fees.
- Other: prep and labelling if Amazon does it, returns processing, removal and disposal, and an inbound placement fee that depends on how many locations you accept.
Selected FBA fulfilment fees fell on 10 June 2026, while Amazon says other FBA fees remain unchanged at this time. Run your own numbers in the FBA calculator guide before ordering stock.
What are the storage limits and inventory health rules?
Amazon may set an inventory storage limit depending on your selling plan and your Inventory Performance Index (IPI). The IPI updates weekly from your 90-day rolling sell-through rate and stranded inventory percentage. Stock held more than 365 days attracts a long-term storage fee, assessed monthly. Amazon does not publish a numeric limit on its public pages. See FBA capacity limits in Australia.
How do returns and customer service work?
Amazon handles customer service and refunds for FBA orders. Sellable returns go back into your sellable inventory. For unsellable items, Amazon assesses who caused the damage and that decides whether you can be reimbursed. A returns processing fee applies in categories where Amazon offers free shipping, and the amount sits inside Seller Central. Your obligations to buyers under Australian Consumer Law do not disappear because Amazon ships the parcel. See Australian Consumer Law and Amazon returns.
Where does FBA not reach?
FBA does not service postcodes 2898, 2899, 4875, 6798 and 6799, and the same restriction applies to Multi-Channel Fulfilment. If many of your customers are in remote areas, check the list. Items you cannot or do not want to send to FBA can be fulfilled yourself. See FBA vs FBM in Australia and fulfilling with Australia Post.
FAQ
Is Amazon FBA available in Australia? Yes. Amazon runs Fulfilment by Amazon for Amazon.com.au sellers, with fulfilment centres in Melbourne, Sydney, Perth and Brisbane named on its public FBA page. You can use FBA for some products and fulfil others yourself.
Do I need an ABN to use FBA? Amazon's registration process asks for business details, and the tax side depends on your structure. Read ABN for Amazon sellers and confirm with the ATO or a registered tax agent. This is general information, not tax advice.
Is there a minimum quantity to send to FBA? Amazon states there is no minimum inventory requirement for FBA. Practical minimums come from carrier costs per box and from the fee per unit, so very small shipments can be uneconomic.
Does Amazon charge GST on FBA fees? Amazon quotes plan fees and FBA fees excluding GST, and says Australian GST applies to most items sold on Amazon.com.au where relevant to the sale. See GST on Amazon seller fees and confirm treatment with a registered tax agent.
Can I use FBA for products I import from China? Yes, if the product is eligible. You must deal with customs, GST on imports and who is the importer of record. Amazon SEND is one optional shipping route from China and dangerous goods are prohibited on it.
What is the biggest FBA mistake new sellers make? Sending too much of one product. Storage is billed on daily average volume and aged stock attracts surcharges, so over-ordering turns into fees. Start with a few weeks of expected sales, then replenish.
