Is Amazon FBA Australia Worth It? A Balanced Answer With Worked A$ Unit Economics

By Blooprint team ยท Published 20 October 2026 ยท 6 min read

Key takeaways

  • FBA can be worth it, but only when the product margin survives the referral fee, fulfilment fee, storage, advertising and returns; for a A$35 item the first two take about 39% of the price.
  • In our illustrative example, a A$35 Home and Kitchen item (GST-inclusive) with A$9.00 landed cost earns about A$5.33 profit per unit before returns, and a A$25 item loses money.
  • FBA has no subscription fee, carrier contract or minimum inventory requirement, and selected FBA fees were cut effective 10 June 2026.
  • Amazon does not publish returns processing, removal or inbound placement amounts publicly, so any FBA model has gaps you must fill from your own Seller Central rate card.

FBA is worth it in Australia when your product's margin is large enough to carry the referral fee, the fulfilment fee, storage, advertising and returns, and when Amazon's speed and Prime reach lift sales enough to pay for them. For a A$35 Home and Kitchen item, the 13% referral fee and A$9.22 fulfilment fee alone take about 39% of the price. It is not worth it for cheap, heavy or slow-moving items. As of October 2026, the worked example below shows where the line sits.

What do you get for the FBA fees?

The fulfilment fee covers picking, packing, shipping, customer service and returns, and Amazon says all shipping costs are included. FBA has no subscription fee, carrier contract or minimum inventory requirement. Fulfilment centres are in Melbourne, Sydney, Perth and Brisbane, and stock is typically available within three working days of delivery. All Amazon.com.au customers get free Australian shipping on eligible orders over A$59.

So FBA buys three things: a fulfilment operation you do not run, a Prime-style delivery promise and customer service handled by Amazon. What it costs is shown next. For the mechanics, see the FBA guide.

Worked example: what does one FBA sale earn?

This is an illustrative example. The inputs we chose are the price, landed cost, ad spend, unit volume and storage time. The rates are Amazon's published rates, all excluding GST.

Assumptions. A Home and Kitchen product sells at A$35.00 including GST. It weighs 600 g and fits the parcel tier (501 to 1,000 g), so the FBA fee for an item priced A$13 or more is A$9.22. The referral fee is 13% and, for simplicity, is applied to the A$35.00 price (Amazon says it applies to the total sales price including delivery and gift wrapping; it does not say whether that is GST-inclusive). Landed cost per unit is A$9.00 excluding GST. Advertising is A$3.50 per unit sold. Each unit occupies 0.003 cubic metres and sits for two months at the January to September rate of A$37.00 per cubic metre.

Line Working A$ per unit
Sale price (GST-inclusive) 35.00
GST to remit if registered 35.00 / 11 -3.18
Revenue excl. GST 31.82
Referral fee 13% x 35.00 -4.55
FBA fulfilment fee Parcel 501-1,000 g -9.22
Storage 0.003 m3 x 37.00 x 2 months -0.22
Landed product cost Assumed -9.00
Advertising Assumed -3.50
Profit per unit before returns and plan fee 5.33

Rates from https://sell.amazon.com.au/pricing. That is 15.2% of the A$35.00 price. At 200 units a month, the A$49.95 Professional fee adds about A$0.25 a unit, taking profit to about A$5.08. The example leaves out returns processing, removal, inbound placement and prep, because Amazon does not publish those amounts on public pages. It also does not model whether Amazon allows you to claim GST credits on fee invoices, which is a question for a registered tax agent.

What happens at a lower price?

Change only the price to A$25.00 and keep the rest: GST is A$2.27, revenue excluding GST A$22.73, the referral fee 13% of A$25.00 is A$3.25, FBA stays A$9.22, storage A$0.22, landed cost A$9.00 and ads, scaled to A$2.50. Profit is 22.73 - 3.25 - 9.22 - 0.22 - 9.00 - 2.50 = A$-1.46 per unit. The fixed fulfilment fee does most of the damage as price falls. That is the pattern to watch: low-priced items in the parcel tier struggle, while higher-priced, light products carry the same A$9.22 on a bigger sale. Run your own figures in the FBA calculator or the profit calculator.

Which fees can quietly change the answer?

  • Storage. The peak rate from October to December is A$51.80 per cubic metre for standard-size items, against A$37.00 from January to September. Aged inventory surcharges begin at 271 days, A$155 per cubic metre, and reach A$370 per cubic metre or A$0.12 per unit, whichever is greater, from 366 days. See storage fees.
  • Returns. A returns processing fee applies in categories where Amazon offers free shipping, but the amount is not public. See returns fees.
  • Inbound placement. Minimal splits pay a location-based fee, and Amazon-optimised splits, generally four or more locations, pay none. The fee amounts are not published.
  • Capacity. Storage limits depend on your plan and Inventory Performance Index, and Amazon publishes no numbers. See capacity limits.
  • Fee changes. Selected FBA and Multi-Channel Fulfilment fees fell on 10 June 2026, and Amazon says it will continue reviewing its fees. See 2026 fee changes.

Are there incentives that improve the early numbers?

Amazon's FBA New Selection programme cuts the referral fee to 5% for 120 days from the buyable date for new-to-FBA parent ASINs, with a cap of 100 standard-size or 50 oversize units per parent ASIN. Applied to the A$35 example, 5% is A$1.75 instead of A$4.55, which would lift profit by A$2.80 per eligible unit. Eligibility rules apply, including an Inventory Performance Index of 300 or more in the trailing six months from 1 December 2025. Do not build a business case on an incentive that ends.

When is FBA worth it?

FBA tends to suit sellers who:

  • sell light, small products priced well above A$13, where the fulfilment fee is a modest share of the price;
  • have a proven, repeatable seller with steady sell-through, so storage fees stay small;
  • want the Prime-style delivery promise and have no warehouse or carrier arrangement;
  • are growing faster than they can pack orders.

When is FBA not worth it?

FBA tends to be a poor fit for:

  • low-priced items, where the fixed fee wipes out the margin;
  • bulky or heavy items, which move into higher tiers (standard oversize starts at A$12.30 for the lightest band, and anything over 116 x 116 x 102 cm or 23 kg is prohibited, with listed exceptions);
  • slow sellers that will hit aged inventory surcharges;
  • products with high return rates;
  • sellers who do not yet know if the product sells.

The alternative is shipping yourself. See FBA vs FBM and FBM with Australia Post. Many sellers use both, FBA for proven lines and self-fulfilment for the rest.

Check this first. The example is illustrative and uses assumed costs. GST treatment of fees and credits depends on your registration; this is general information, not tax advice. Confirm with the ATO or a registered tax agent.

FAQ

Is Amazon FBA profitable in Australia? It can be. In our illustrative example a A$35 item earned about A$5.33 per unit before returns, and a A$25 item lost A$1.46. Profit depends on price, weight, landed cost and advertising, so model each product.

How much does Amazon FBA cost in Australia? There is no subscription fee. You pay a per-unit fulfilment fee from A$3.64 for the smallest, cheapest items, storage from A$37.00 per cubic metre a month, and a referral fee on each sale, all excluding GST.

Do I need a lot of money to start FBA? FBA has no minimum inventory requirement. Your real outlay is the stock, freight and any import costs. Start with a small first shipment.

Is FBA better than shipping myself? Not always. FBA includes shipping and customer service, but fees can take about half of a low-priced sale. Self-fulfilment keeps more margin but costs your time and must meet Amazon's performance targets.

Can I use FBA from China or overseas? Many Australian sellers import stock and send it to Amazon. See shipping from China to Amazon FBA and importer of record.

What is the biggest FBA mistake in Australia? Sending too much stock of an untested product. Storage and aged inventory surcharges turn slow stock into a loss.

Next step

Take one product, fill the example table with your own price, weight and landed cost, and see whether profit survives a realistic return rate. If it does, send a small first shipment.
