An FBA returns processing fee applies on Amazon.com.au when a customer returns an item in one of the categories for which Amazon offers free return shipping. Amazon does not state the amount on its public Australian pricing page, so as of October 2026 any specific dollar figure you see online is unverified. This page explains when the fee applies, what is and is not published, how returned stock is handled, and how to put returns into your margin.

Amazon Australia Returns Processing Fee: What Applies, What Is Published and How to Budget for It
By Blooprint team ยท Published 20 October 2026 ยท 6 min read
Key takeaways
- Amazon applies an FBA returns processing fee to customer returns in categories where Amazon offers free shipping, but the Australian amount is not on its public pricing page.
- The FBA fulfilment fee already covers returns handling in general, so the returns processing fee is a separate, category-limited charge on top.
- Sellable returns go back into sellable inventory, and unsellable items are assessed for who caused the damage, which decides whether you are reimbursed.
- Budget returns by rate and category, not by a quoted fee: read the fee schedule in Seller Central, then test it on a few returned units.

Does Amazon charge a returns processing fee in Australia?
Yes, in some categories. Amazon's FBA page says a returns processing fee will apply when the customer-returned item is in one of the categories for which Amazon offers free shipping. It does not list those categories or the amount on that page.
Two things follow. First, you cannot assume the fee applies to your product, and you cannot assume it does not. Check the category list and fee schedule in Seller Central. Second, this fee is separate from the main fulfilment fee. The fulfilment fee covers "picking, packing, shipping, customer service and returns" in general terms, but a category-limited processing fee can still be charged on the return itself.
Amazon does not publish the Australian rate on its public pages. Figures quoted by third-party blogs, and by European or US Seller Central forum posts, relate to other marketplaces or are unsourced, so they are not repeated here. Amazon publishes the Australian schedule inside Seller Central.
What happens to a returned FBA item?
Amazon's FBA page describes two outcomes:
- Sellable returns go back into your sellable inventory. The unit is available to the next buyer, and you keep the stock, though you will have paid the original referral and fulfilment fees and may pay the returns processing fee.
- Unsellable returns are assessed for who caused the damage, and that decides reimbursement.
Amazon does not publish the reimbursement rules or timelines for Australia on that page. If a unit comes back unsellable, check the reason code and the reimbursement status in Seller Central before you decide what to do with the stock. Unsellable stock sitting in a fulfilment centre also accrues storage fees until you act, and you can order its removal or disposal.
How do returns affect your profit per unit?
Returns cost you in four places: the lost sale, the fulfilment fee you already paid, any returns processing fee, and the unit if it comes back unsellable. Build them in as a rate. Here is an illustrative example with every input editable, using published rates excluding GST.
You sell a 600 g parcel item at A$25.00 in Home and Kitchen. The referral fee is 13% (A$3.25) and the FBA fulfilment fee is A$9.22. Say 8% of units come back and 60% of those return sellable. Say the returns processing fee is X, the amount shown in your Seller Central schedule, and your landed cost is A$8.00.
| Item per 100 units sold | Calculation | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Returns | 8 units | |
| Returned unsellable | 8 x 40% = 3.2 units | 3.2 x A$8.00 = A$25.60 landed cost lost |
| Fulfilment fees not recovered | 8 x A$9.22 | A$73.76 |
| Returns processing | 8 x X | 8X |
The 8% and 60% are assumptions, not Amazon figures. With these inputs the known costs are A$99.36 per 100 units sold, about A$0.99 a unit, before the processing fee. Whether Amazon refunds part of the referral fee on a returned order is not stated on the public pricing page, so check your settlement reports. Use the profit calculator to change each input.
Which products return most?
Amazon does not publish category return rates for Australia, and no sourced figures are available. Return risk comes from fit, sizing, product description mismatches and breakage in transit. Clothing and shoes are the obvious high-risk group because size varies, but your own return reasons in Seller Central are better evidence than any general statistic.
How do you reduce returns?
- Read return reasons weekly. Group them by ASIN and reason. A single recurring reason usually points to a listing fix.
- Fix the listing, not the symptom. Add dimensions, size charts and clear images. See listing optimisation and A+ Content.
- Check packaging. Damage in transit shows up as unsellable returns. Amazon assesses whether damage was caused in the network, but strong packaging reduces the argument.
- Watch defect signals. High return rates feed into customer experience and account metrics. See order defect rate and the account health rating.
- Price in the cost. For high-return products, a higher price or a different fulfilment method may beat FBA. See FBA vs FBM.
What are your obligations to customers on returns?
Amazon's fee is a commercial charge. Your obligations to the customer come from Australian Consumer Law, and a marketplace return policy does not remove consumer guarantees. This is general information, not legal advice. Confirm your obligations with the ACCC or a lawyer. See Australian Consumer Law and Amazon returns and the Australian Consumer Law glossary entry.
For seller-fulfilled orders on Easy Ship, Amazon states that refunds for returns are issued within 2 business days of receiving the item. That is an Easy Ship rule, not an FBA one.
Where do returns fees show up in your reports?
Returns charges appear in Seller Central payment and fee reports, not on the pricing page. Pull a settlement report for a month with returns, filter for return-related fee lines and compare the per-unit amount with the schedule. That gives you your own measured rate, which beats any estimate in a blog post. For the full stack of fees around it, see Amazon Australia seller fees.
Did the 2026 fee changes touch returns?
Amazon's 10 June 2026 announcement reduced selected FBA and MCF fulfilment fees and says nothing about returns processing, storage or removal. It also says other fulfilment fees remain unchanged at this time. So the only safe reading is that returns processing is unchanged, with the caveat that the Seller Central schedule is not public. Amazon also adjusted other fees from 1 August 2025 without figures in the announcement. Our fee changes timeline is updated when Amazon publishes more.
How do you check your own returns fee in Seller Central?
- Open the FBA fee schedule for Amazon.com.au in Seller Central help and find the returns processing section.
- Check whether your category is on the free-return-shipping list.
- Download a settlement or transaction report for a month with returns.
- Filter for return-related lines, divide by units returned and compare with the schedule.
- Repeat each quarter. Amazon says it will continue reviewing its fees.
FAQ
How much is the Amazon FBA returns processing fee in Australia? Amazon does not publish the amount on its public Australian pages. It states a fee applies to returns in categories where Amazon offers free shipping, and the schedule is inside Seller Central.
Does the returns processing fee apply to all categories? No. Amazon says it applies in categories where it offers free shipping on returns. The list of categories is not on the public page, so check Seller Central for your product.
Is the fulfilment fee refunded when a customer returns an item? The public pages do not say. Amazon states the fulfilment fee covers picking, packing, shipping, customer service and returns, so assume you do not get it back and check your settlement report.
What happens to returned items that are damaged? Unsellable items are assessed for who caused the damage, and that decides reimbursement. Sellable items go back into your sellable inventory.
Can I avoid returns fees by using FBM? Returns processing is an FBA charge. With FBM you handle returns yourself, with your own freight and handling costs, and you still owe consumer guarantees. Compare the two on your own numbers.
Is GST added to the returns processing fee? Amazon quotes FBA fees excluding GST but does not state a GST treatment for this fee. Check your invoices and confirm with the ATO or a registered tax agent; this is general information, not tax advice.
