Amazon charges FBA storage fees in Australia per cubic metre per month, billed on your daily average volume. As of October 2026, standard-size items cost A$37.00 per cubic metre and oversize items A$34.20 from January to September, rising to A$51.80 and A$48.00 from October to December. Stock held for 271 days or more also attracts an aged inventory surcharge, from A$155 per cubic metre up to A$370 per cubic metre, or A$0.12 per unit if that is greater, at 366 days or more. All figures exclude GST.

How much is monthly FBA storage in Australia?

Period Standard-size Oversize
January to September A$37.00 per cubic metre per month A$34.20 per cubic metre per month
October to December A$51.80 per cubic metre per month A$48.00 per cubic metre per month

Storage is billed on daily average volume in cubic metres, not on unit count or weight. The practical meaning: a bulky, light product costs more to store than a dense one of the same value. A box of 100 pillows takes far more of your storage bill than 100 phone cases.

Peak season is a 40% step up for standard-size items (A$37.00 to A$51.80). That is a calculation from the published rates, not an Amazon statement. For example, stock you send in September is cheap to hold in September and dearer to hold through the Christmas run.

What does storage cost for a real product?

This is illustrative and built from the published rates, excluding GST. You hold 100 units of a standard-size product. Each packed unit is 20 x 10 x 10 cm, which is 0.002 cubic metres, so 100 units occupy 0.2 cubic metres.

Period Rate Cost for 0.2 cubic metres
January to September A$37.00 per cubic metre A$7.40 per month
October to December A$51.80 per cubic metre A$10.36 per month

That is A$0.074 per unit per month, or A$0.104 in peak. For a unit that sells for A$25 it is small. The aged surcharge is where storage bills turn into real money. Remember that Amazon bills the daily average volume, so units that sell down during the month cost less than the opening quantity suggests.

What is the aged inventory surcharge?

The aged inventory surcharge applies to stock that has sat in a fulfilment centre for a long time. Amazon assesses it on the 15th of each month, per cubic metre.

Days in the fulfilment centre Surcharge
271 to 300 days A$155 per cubic metre
301 to 330 days A$175 per cubic metre
331 to 365 days A$185 per cubic metre
366 days or more A$370 per cubic metre or A$0.12 per unit, whichever is greater

Amazon's FBA page also describes a long-term storage fee on items stored more than 365 days, assessed monthly, with no amount on that page. The pricing page shows the 366-days-or-more row of the surcharge table. Amazon does not say publicly whether these are two separate charges or one. Check your Seller Central rate card and fee reports.

Worked example: what does an aged shipment cost?

Using the same 0.2 cubic metres of stock (100 units) from above, excluding GST and illustrative:

Age on the 15th Calculation Surcharge
280 days 0.2 x A$155 A$31.00
320 days 0.2 x A$175 A$35.00
350 days 0.2 x A$185 A$37.00
370 days Greater of 0.2 x A$370 = A$74.00, or 100 x A$0.12 = A$12.00 A$74.00

At 370 days the surcharge is A$74.00 against a monthly storage fee of A$7.40. The surcharge is ten times the storage fee, so the 366-day line is the one to protect. The A$0.12 per-unit alternative only wins for very small items. At A$370 per cubic metre it exceeds the cubic-metre charge only when a packed unit is below about 0.00032 cubic metres, which is roughly a 7 cm cube (a calculation from the published rates, source: https://sell.amazon.com.au/pricing).

How do you avoid the aged inventory surcharge?

  1. Check inventory age every month. Amazon says to use Inventory Age tools to see how much you hold and for how long.
  2. Act at 240 days, not 270. The surcharge starts at 271 days. Pick a review date a month earlier, as price cuts, deals or removal take time.
  3. Price to sell through. Compare the cost of a discount with the surcharge plus storage. Often a markdown beats the surcharge. See Amazon deals and coupons, noting Amazon does not publish deal fees publicly.
  4. Remove or dispose before the break. Removal has a per-unit fee (see removal and disposal fees). Compare it with the surcharge.
  5. Set automated removal. Amazon allows automated removal of fulfillable inventory aged 1 to 12 months or older than 12 months, effective 20 March 2024, with standard removal fees applying. Turning it on without checking the removal fee can cost more than the aged stock is worth.
  6. Use the FBA New Selection benefit if you qualify. The first 30 units per parent ASIN get no storage fees for 90 days and free removal within 180 days; apparel and shoes get 100 units for 120 days. Eligibility includes listings buyable on or after 28 October 2025 and an Inventory Performance Index of 300 or more from 1 December 2025.

Are there storage limits?

Amazon may apply an inventory storage limit to your account, and limits can depend on your selling plan. Limits can also depend on your Inventory Performance Index, which updates weekly from 90-day rolling sell-through and stranded inventory percentage.

Amazon does not publish numeric limits or the amount of any storage utilisation surcharge on public pages. They sit inside Seller Central. See Amazon FBA capacity limits in Australia. We publish no figure because Amazon has not published one.

What changed in 2025 and 2026?

Amazon announced fee adjustments from 1 August 2025 to "better align with our underlying costs" and encourage efficient FBA storage, with the Professional subscription and most referral fees unchanged. The announcement gave no figures. The 10 June 2026 reductions covered selected fulfilment fees, and they did not mention storage. Read Amazon Australia fee changes in 2026 for the timeline.
