Amazon Australia Individual vs Professional Seller Account: Costs, Break-Even and Features

By Blooprint team ยท Published 20 October 2026 ยท 6 min read

Key takeaways

  • Individual costs A$0.99 per item sold and Professional costs A$49.95 a month, both excluding GST, and both pay referral fees on top.
  • On fees alone Professional is cheaper from 51 items a month (51 x A$0.99 is A$50.49, above A$49.95), but Amazon's own guideline is 50 items.
  • Professional is required for Amazon Ads, Lightning Deals, Best Deals and Easy Ship, so a seller who wants to advertise needs it from day one.
  • You can change plan later from Seller Central, so starting on Individual to test a product is a reasonable, low-commitment choice.

The Individual plan on Amazon Australia costs A$0.99 for each item sold, with no monthly fee, and the Professional plan costs A$49.95 a month whatever you sell, both excluding GST, with referral fees on every sale on either plan. On fees alone, Professional is cheaper once you sell 51 or more items a month. Amazon suggests Individual for fewer than 50 items a month and Professional above that, as guidance and not a hard limit. Features, not only price, usually decide it.

The Professional fee "applies when you have active listings, no matter how many units you sell". Media items (books, DVD, music, software, video games and consoles) carry a A$1.00 closing fee per item on all plans.

What does each plan cost at different volumes?

The plan fee is the only part that differs. Referral and FBA fees are the same on both. Using the published rates:

Items sold a month Individual (A$0.99 each) Professional (A$49.95) Cheaper on fees
10 A$9.90 A$49.95 Individual
30 A$29.70 A$49.95 Individual
50 A$49.50 A$49.95 Individual (by A$0.45)
51 A$50.49 A$49.95 Professional
100 A$99.00 A$49.95 Professional
300 A$297.00 A$49.95 Professional

All figures exclude GST (rates from https://sell.amazon.com.au/pricing). The break-even is A$49.95 divided by A$0.99, about 50.5 items. These are plan fees only. A seller at 100 items saves A$49.05 a month on the plan by choosing Professional, but ad clicks are a separate cost, so compare the whole picture on the seller fees page.

What does Professional unlock?

Amazon Ads. Advertising needs an active Professional seller account. Sponsored Products charge per click, with no charge for impressions, and Sponsored Brands also need Brand Registry. See the Amazon Ads guide.

Deals. Professional is required to create Lightning Deals and Best Deals. Amazon's Prime Day guidance for sellers recommends Prime-exclusive discounts, coupons, Sponsored Products and FBA. Coupons are set up from the Coupons dashboard. The deals and coupons page has more.

Easy Ship. Easy Ship for domestic non-FBA orders needs the Professional plan and an eligible Australian pick-up address, with fees from A$4.10 a package excluding GST.

Tools. Amazon lists bulk upload, order reports, seller-customised shipping rates, special listing features, API and report access, and eligibility for Featured Offer status as Professional features. Featured Offer eligibility is also what Sponsored Products ads need. The Buy Box page explains how offers are chosen.

Programmes. Vine requires the Professional plan along with Brand Registry and eligible FBA offers. See Amazon Vine.

What does Individual still allow?

Individual lets you list, sell and be paid by bank transfer, with per-item pricing and the same referral fee as Professional. FBA itself has no subscription fee or minimum inventory requirement, but Amazon's public pages do not say whether Individual sellers can use FBA, so confirm in Seller Central before planning around it. The honest use for Individual is testing: list a few products, learn how orders and fees behave, and upgrade when volume or advertising justifies it.

Which plan should you choose?

  • Choose Individual if you sell under about 50 items a month, you are testing one or two products, and you do not need ads or deals yet.
  • Choose Professional if you plan to advertise, run deals, use Easy Ship, apply for Vine or expect more than 50 items a month.
  • Choose Professional from day one if you are launching a private label product, because launch advertising is part of the plan. See private label on Amazon Australia.

Whichever you pick, run your numbers per product first: the plan fee is small next to the referral and fulfilment fees, which can take around half of a low-priced sale (see the FBA worth-it analysis). Check any promotional offers for new sellers in Seller Central too, because Amazon lists new seller incentives of "up to $75,000", terms apply. You can change plan in Seller Central. Selecting a plan is the first step in the registration walkthrough.

What does the Individual plan cost in practice?

Take an Individual seller moving 20 items a month. Plan fees are 20 x A$0.99, which is A$19.80 excluding GST, against A$49.95 on Professional (rates from https://sell.amazon.com.au/pricing). That A$30.15 difference is real money for a seller still proving a product. But the same seller who wants to test advertising pays more for Professional and also gets the ability to run campaigns. A product that cannot sell 20 units a month without ads is a signal worth having cheaply.

The reverse also holds. A seller moving 200 items on Individual pays A$198 in per-item fees, against A$49.95 on Professional, a gap of A$148.05 a month. At that volume staying on Individual is simply paying extra.

What do you lose by starting on the wrong plan?

Less than people fear. The plan is a billing and feature choice, not a structural one, and Amazon says you can switch it in Seller Central. The cost of a wrong guess is the fee difference for the months you ran it, plus any launch timing you missed because ads or deals were not available. Fee changes are tracked on the 2026 fee changes page, and the monthly fee itself is covered in the Professional plan fee guide.

What about global accounts?

A merged global Professional account costs the equivalent of US$39.99 a month, split across each country with an active listing and charged in local currency. Merged accounts cover North America, eight European stores, Japan and Australia. See Amazon global selling from Australia.

Check this first. Whether GST is added to the plan fee on your invoices is not stated on public pages. The registration guide words the Professional fee as "+GST". Confirm with a registered tax agent. This is general information, not tax advice.

FAQ

Is Individual or Professional better on Amazon Australia? Neither is better outright. Individual is cheaper below 51 items a month and has no monthly fee. Professional is needed for ads, deals and Easy Ship. If you plan to advertise, you need Professional.

How much is the Amazon Professional plan in Australia? A$49.95 a month excluding GST, plus selling fees, applying when you have active listings. The registration guide charges the first month once registration is complete and verified.

Can I upgrade from Individual to Professional later? Yes. Amazon says you can change your selling plan from Seller Central under your services settings. Check the effective date and billing in Seller Central.

Do Individual sellers pay referral fees? Yes. The A$0.99 per-item fee is charged on top of selling fees such as the referral fee, which is a percentage of the sale price by category and is the same on both plans.

Can Individual sellers run Amazon Ads? No. Amazon's seller advertising page says you need an active Professional seller account to advertise, so an Individual seller must upgrade before creating any Sponsored Products or Sponsored Brands campaign.

Is there a limit of 50 items on the Individual plan? Amazon suggests Individual for fewer than 50 items a month, but describes it as guidance. Amazon's public pages do not publish a hard cap.
