To sell on Amazon Australia, you choose a selling plan, register an account on Amazon.com.au with your business details, a credit card and a bank account, verify your identity, list a product, fulfil the order yourself or through Fulfilment by Amazon (FBA), and get paid by bank transfer. Amazon says registration can take "just a few hours" and identity verification "usually takes four business days or less". Most of the real work sits before and after registration, and this page walks through all of it in order.

How to Sell on Amazon Australia: From Registration to Your First Sale in 2026
By Blooprint team ยท Published 20 October 2026 ยท 6 min read
Key takeaways
- Registration on Amazon.com.au can take a few hours, and Amazon says identity verification usually takes four business days or less.
- The Professional plan is A$49.95 a month (excl. GST); the Individual plan is A$0.99 per item sold. Both pay a referral fee on each sale.
- An ABN is not mandatory to register as an individual, but a business with an ABN or ACN enters it in the company registration field.
- Decide what to sell, how you will fulfil it and what each unit costs before you register, because the fees can take around half of a low-priced sale.

What do you need to decide before you register?
Registration is the easy part. Three decisions made first save the most money.
- What you will sell. Some categories are open to all sellers, some need the Professional plan, some need approval and some are prohibited for third-party sellers. Used and refurbished goods must go through Amazon Renewed, and digital products are not allowed. Read what to sell on Amazon Australia before you buy stock.
- Where the stock comes from. The three common models are private label, wholesale and your own made or imported product. Dropshipping has strict rules, covered in the dropshipping policy page.
- How you will fulfil. You either ship orders yourself or send stock to Amazon. Is FBA in Australia worth it? works through the numbers.
Step 1: Choose a selling plan
The Professional plan costs A$49.95 a month plus selling fees, excluding GST, and applies when you have active listings, however many units you sell. The Individual plan costs A$0.99 per unit sold plus selling fees. Amazon suggests Individual for fewer than 50 items a month and Professional for more.
Pick Professional if you want to run Amazon Ads, create Lightning Deals or Best Deals, or use Easy Ship. The Individual vs Professional comparison has the full table. You can change plan later from your Seller Central services settings.
Step 2: Register your seller account
Have these ready: a government-issued ID, an email address, an internationally chargeable credit card, a bank account, proof of address from the last 180 days and tax information. The registration form then asks for:
- business information: location, business type, business name, company registration number and phone number;
- seller information: full legal name, citizenship, country of birth, date of birth and residential address;
- payment information: a card that is charged the Professional fee once registration is complete and verified;
- store and product information: store name, product codes and brand details.
The click-by-click detail is on the registration walkthrough, and the full document list is on the requirements checklist.
Step 3: Sort out your ABN, or choose "individual"
If you are an individual or an unincorporated business, you choose "None, I am an individual" as the business type. If you have an ABN or ACN, you enter it in the company registration number field. So Amazon does not force you to hold an ABN to register as an individual. The ATO and the Australian Business Register have their own rules about when you should have one, which turn on whether you are running a business. See ABN for Amazon sellers in Australia and the hobby vs business guide.
Step 4: Verify your identity
Every seller must verify their identity. You choose between Instant Identity Verification, which uses a photo of your face and your ID, and a video call through Persona with your ID in hand. Documents must be valid, unexpired and unaltered. Details, and what to do if verification stalls, are on the identity verification page.
Step 5: Set up Seller Central and list your first product
Seller Central is where you manage your account, add products, update inventory, manage orders and see payments. The Seller Central guide tours it.
Most products need a GTIN, which you can buy from GS1 Australia or request an exemption for in Seller Central. If the product already exists in Amazon's catalogue, you may be able to match the existing listing instead. Titles can run to 200 characters, and main images need to be at least 500 by 500 pixels, with 1,000 by 1,000 recommended. Branded products need ownership or reseller authorisation.
Step 6: Choose how to fulfil orders
With FBA, Amazon stores the stock, picks, packs, ships and handles returns and customer service. FBA has no subscription fee or minimum inventory requirement. Centres are in Melbourne, Sydney, Perth and Brisbane, and Amazon says stock is typically available within three working days of delivery. If you ship yourself, you control the packaging and postage but must meet Amazon's performance targets. See FBA vs FBM and the FBA guide.
Step 7: Know what each sale costs
A referral fee applies to every sale, from 5% to 15% by category, on the total sales price including delivery and gift wrapping. FBA adds a fulfilment fee from A$3.64 for the smallest, cheapest items, excluding GST. A Home and Kitchen item at A$25 through FBA in a 501 to 1,000 g parcel pays A$3.25 referral plus A$9.22 fulfilment, which is about half the price. The full stack is on the seller fees page.
Step 8: Get paid
Amazon pays by electronic funds transfer to an Australian bank account, not to a credit card or PayPal, and only when your account balance is positive. After Amazon initiates a payment it can take up to five business days to reach your bank. The settlement cycle itself is published inside Seller Central; see when Amazon pays sellers.
Step 9: Keep your account healthy
Amazon sets targets for order defect rate (under 1%), pre-fulfilment cancel rate (under 2.5%) and late shipment rate (under 4%). Learn the account health rating early, and be wary of unsolicited messages claiming to be Amazon: see Amazon seller scams in Australia.
Check this first. GST, income tax and customs rules depend on your situation. This page is general information, not tax or legal advice. Confirm with the ATO or a registered tax agent. See GST for Amazon sellers.
FAQ
How long does it take to start selling on Amazon Australia? Registration can be done in a few hours and verification usually takes four business days or less, according to Amazon. Your first sale depends more on listing quality, stock and, if you use FBA, shipping time to the fulfilment centre.
How much does it cost to start selling on Amazon Australia? The Individual plan has no monthly fee, with A$0.99 per item sold, and the Professional plan is A$49.95 a month, both excluding GST. You then pay referral fees and, with FBA, fulfilment and storage fees, plus the cost of stock.
Do I need an ABN to sell on Amazon Australia? Not to register as an individual. If you have an ABN or ACN you enter it in the company registration field. Whether you should hold one depends on whether you are running a business.
Can I sell on Amazon Australia from overseas? The registration guide says to select the country where your business is registered, but it does not state outright that overseas sellers may register. Check Amazon's current rules in Seller Central before relying on it.
Do I need to buy barcodes? Most products need a GTIN from GS1 Australia, or an exemption requested in Seller Central. Amazon may also match an existing listing.
Should I use FBA or ship myself? It depends on unit size, price and volume. FBA fees can take about half of a low-priced sale, but they include shipping and returns handling. Work out both in the FBA worth-it analysis.
