To sell on Amazon Australia you need a government-issued photo ID, proof of address dated within 180 days, an internationally chargeable credit card, a bank account, a phone number and tax information. A business seller also needs a business verification document and proof of authorisation to represent the company. Identity verification is mandatory for every seller. An ABN is not compulsory for individuals. The checklist below covers the account, then the products.

Amazon Australia Seller Requirements: The Documents and Eligibility Checklist for 2026
By Blooprint team ยท Published 20 October 2026 ยท 6 min read
Key takeaways
- Every seller must verify their identity; individuals need photo ID plus proof of address dated within 180 days, and businesses add a verification document and proof of authorisation.
- You need an internationally chargeable credit card (AMEX, Visa or Mastercard), a bank account and a phone number you can answer during registration.
- An ABN is not required to register as an individual, but it can double as the business verification document for a business seller.
- Product rules matter as much as account rules: most products need a GTIN, some categories need approval, and some items are prohibited.

What counts as valid ID and proof of address?
Amazon accepts a passport, driver's licence or photo ID card, and it must be valid and unexpired. The registration guide sets the file rules: documents must be in an accepted language or come with a notarised translation, high-resolution, under 50 MB, in TIF, TIFF, PNG, JPG, JPEG or PDF format, unaltered and without password protection. For business sellers the proof of address needs to show the business or entity name. Amazon does not list which specific documents count as proof of address on its public pages, so check the options Seller Central offers when you upload.
The step-by-step on how verification runs is on the identity verification page.
Do you need an ABN or ACN?
Amazon does not require an ABN for an individual: choose "None, I am an individual" as the business type. If you have an ABN or ACN, enter it in the company registration number field. A business seller can use an ABN or ACN extract as a business verification document.
Amazon's rule is not the only rule. The ATO and Australian Business Register decide whether you are entitled to an ABN, and a hobby does not qualify. Read ABN for Amazon sellers for the detail. If your turnover reaches A$75,000, you must register for GST within 21 days of becoming aware of it. See GST for Amazon sellers.
Check this first. This is general information, not tax or legal advice. Confirm your ABN and GST position with the ATO or a registered tax agent.
Which selling plan do you need?
No plan is a registration requirement as such, but features depend on it. Professional is required for Amazon Ads, Lightning Deals and Best Deals, and Easy Ship. The Professional plan is A$49.95 a month excluding GST and the Individual plan is A$0.99 per item sold. See Individual vs Professional.
What are the product requirements?
Account approval does not mean every product is allowed. Check these before buying stock.
- GTIN. Most products need a UPC, EAN, JAN or ISBN, obtained from GS1 Australia, or an exemption requested in Seller Central. Amazon may also match an existing listing. See GTIN exemption.
- Category access. Some categories are open to all, some need the Professional plan, some need approval and some are prohibited. Grocery is named as one needing approval. See category approval and restricted products.
- Brands. Branded products need ownership or reseller authorisation.
- Condition. Used and refurbished products must go through Amazon Renewed, and digital products are not allowed.
- Handmade. Handmade is not currently possible on Amazon.com.au.
Safety and labelling law applies on top of Amazon's rules: see product safety on Amazon Australia.
What extra requirements apply to FBA, Easy Ship and Brand Registry?
Each programme adds its own conditions on top of registration.
| Programme | Requirement | Source |
|---|---|---|
| FBA | No subscription fee, carrier contract or minimum inventory requirement; products larger than 116 x 116 x 102 cm or heavier than 23 kg are prohibited, with listed exceptions | https://sell.amazon.com.au/pricing |
| Easy Ship | Professional plan and an eligible Australian pick-up address | https://sell.amazon.com.au/learn/educational-resources |
| Brand Registry | Brand name or logo permanently on products or packaging, and a trade mark you own | https://sell.amazon.com.au/brand-registry |
| Amazon Ads | Active Professional account; Sponsored Brands also need Brand Registry | https://sell.amazon.com.au/advertising |
FBA does not serve the remote postcodes 2898, 2899, 4875, 6798 and 6799. Prep and labelling rules for FBA stock are on the prep and labelling page.
What requirements sit outside Amazon?
Amazon's checks are only part of the picture. Several Australian obligations apply to you whatever Amazon accepts.
- Tax. ABN entitlement, GST registration at A$75,000 turnover and income tax reporting are ATO matters. See income tax for Amazon sellers and BAS.
- Consumer law. Sellers carry their own responsibilities under the Australian Consumer Law. See Australian Consumer Law and returns.
- Product safety. Mandatory standards and bans apply to some products, such as button batteries. See product safety.
- Imports. If you import stock, customs and import GST apply. See import duty and GST for FBA.
None of these is an Amazon sign-up requirement, which is why many new sellers miss them. An Amazon staff reply in the seller forum says sellers are responsible for their own taxes. Budget time for these items alongside the account setup, not after your first sale, and keep records from day one so your accountant can work from them. The ATO and business.gov.au publish free guidance for new businesses.
What are the most common gaps?
Four gaps cause most delays: ID details that differ from the form, proof of address older than 180 days, a card type Amazon does not accept, and a product that turns out to need approval after the stock is bought. Work through the list above in that order. For the verification process itself, see the identity verification page.
Do you need to be in Australia?
Amazon's registration guide tells non-Australian sellers to select the country where their business is registered and to supply documents in an accepted language or with a notarised translation. It does not say outright that overseas sellers may register. Existing accounts can sell to Australia through Sell Globally. If you are registering from outside Australia, confirm eligibility inside Seller Central.
FAQ
What documents do I need to sell on Amazon Australia? Individuals need government-issued photo ID and proof of address dated within 180 days. Business sellers also need a business verification document and proof of authorisation.
Is there a minimum age? Amazon does not state a minimum age publicly. Valid photo ID and a credit card in your name are required, so in practice you need to be able to hold both.
Do I need a company to sell on Amazon Australia? No. Amazon provides an individual route where you select "None, I am an individual". Whether a company suits you is a question for a registered tax agent.
Do I need inventory before registering? No requirement is stated. You do need product information during registration, such as product codes and brand status.
Do I need a trade mark? Not to register or sell. You need one for Brand Registry, which is free and requires the applicant to own the trade mark. See Brand Registry in Australia.
Do I need an Australian bank account? A valid bank account is required, and payments are made by electronic funds transfer, not to a card or PayPal. Amazon's public pages do not say whether a foreign account is accepted.
