Amazon Seller Central Australia Sign Up: The Registration Steps, Field by Field

By Blooprint team ยท Published 20 October 2026 ยท 7 min read

Key takeaways

  • Amazon's registration has six stages: plan, business information, seller information, payment, store and product information, then identity verification.
  • The A$49.95 Professional fee (plus GST) is charged as soon as you finish registration and your information is verified, not before.
  • If you are an individual or unincorporated, choose 'None, I am an individual'; if you have an ABN or ACN, enter it in the company registration field.
  • Prepaid cards, gift certificates, cheques and PayPal are not accepted as the registration payment method; AMEX, Visa and Mastercard are.

To sign up for Amazon Seller Central in Australia, go to the Amazon Australia selling page, choose a selling plan, then complete five more stages: business information, seller information, payment information, store and product information, and identity verification. Amazon says you can often finish registration in "just a few hours", and verification "usually takes four business days or less". Work through the stages below with your documents open beside you, because the form times out less often than it rejects mismatched details.

What should you have open before you start?

Amazon lists a government-issued ID, an email address, an internationally chargeable credit card, a bank account, a business licence or registration if you have one, proof of residential address from the last 180 days, and tax information. A phone number you can answer during registration is also required. The full eligibility list, with document rules, is on the seller requirements page.

You can register with a business email or an existing Amazon customer account. Many sellers use a separate business email so the seller account is not tied to a personal shopping login.

Step 1: Choose Individual or Professional

The Professional plan is A$49.95 a month excluding GST, and the registration guide words it as "$49.95 AUD (+GST)". The Individual plan is A$0.99 per item sold, excluding GST. Amazon's guidance is Individual for fewer than 50 items a month. The Individual vs Professional page explains which features switch on with each. You can change plan later in Seller Central.

Step 2: Enter your business information

The form asks for your business location, business type, registered business name, company registration number and phone number. The business type field is where most Australian sellers get stuck.

If you are Business type to choose Company registration number
An individual, or an unincorporated sole trader "None, I am an individual" Optional; enter your ABN if you hold one
A company Your legal entity type ACN or ABN

Amazon's page says to enter "None, I am an individual" if you operate as an individual or your business is not otherwise incorporated, and to enter your ABN or ACN in the company registration field if you have one. An ABN is a unique 11-digit number issued by the government. Whether you should have an ABN is a separate question, covered in ABN for Amazon sellers.

Step 3: Enter your seller information

Amazon asks for your full legal name, citizenship, country of birth, date of birth, residential address, phone number, and whether you are a beneficial owner, a legal representative or both. A beneficial owner is a person who directly or indirectly owns more than 25% of the shares or voting rights, and if no one qualifies, a senior manager is treated as one. A legal representative has specific powers to act for the business and may or may not be an owner.

Enter names and addresses exactly as they appear on your ID and proof of address. A middle name left off the form but present on the passport is a common reason for a verification failure.

Step 4: Add your payment method

You need a credit or debit card in AMEX, Visa or Mastercard. Prepaid cards, gift certificates, cheques and PayPal are not accepted. The card needs a valid billing address and must be internationally chargeable. On the Professional plan it is charged the monthly fee "as soon as you complete the registration process and your information is verified".

Separately, you need a bank account to receive payments. Amazon pays by electronic funds transfer and does not pay to a credit card or an online payment system such as PayPal. This is the account the payment schedule refers to.

Step 5: Add store and product information

Provide your store name, the product codes you plan to use (such as UPC or ISBN), whether you are the manufacturer or brand owner, and any trade mark information. Your store name is shown to customers, so use the trading name you are happy to be known by. If you plan to enrol a brand later, read Amazon Brand Registry in Australia first, because the trade mark requirement affects how you name things.

Step 6: Verify your identity

Choose Instant Identity Verification, which uses a photo of your face and your ID, or Video Screening Verification, a video call through Persona with your ID on hand. Individuals upload photo ID and proof of address dated within 180 days. Business sellers upload photo ID, a business verification document, proof of authorisation and proof of address showing the business or entity name. The full process, file rules and fixes are on the identity verification page.

Should a company or the owner register?

If you trade through a Pty Ltd, register the account in the company's name. Business sellers need photo ID for the person registering, a business verification document, proof that the person is authorised to represent the company, and proof of address showing the business or entity name. Accepted business verification documents include an ABN or ACN extract, GST registration, a certificate of good standing, a business licence, a tax clearance or a chamber of commerce statement.

Settle the structure before you register, so the details you verify match the entity that will trade. Which structure suits you is a question for a registered tax agent or accountant, not for Amazon.

How long should you budget?

Allow a day to gather documents, a few hours to complete the forms and up to four business days for verification, on Amazon's own figures. If you plan to send stock to an Amazon fulfilment centre, also allow for GTINs, labels and shipping time, covered in Send to Amazon shipments.

What happens after you submit?

Amazon confirms the outcome by email once verification is complete. Once you are in, you can open Seller Central and start on the Seller Central tour. Monthly and selling fees start once you have active offers. Amazon also lists new seller incentives of "up to $75,000", subject to terms, so read the conditions before you count on any of it.

What goes wrong at registration, and how do you fix it?

  • Name mismatch. The legal name on the form differs from the ID. Edit the form to match the ID.
  • Old proof of address. Amazon wants a document dated within the last 180 days.
  • Unaccepted card type. Use AMEX, Visa or Mastercard credit or debit, not a prepaid or gift card.
  • Poor image quality. Documents must be high-resolution, under 50 MB, in TIF, TIFF, PNG, JPG, JPEG or PDF format, unaltered and without password protection.
  • A fake sign-up page. Register only from Amazon's own pages. See Amazon seller scams in Australia.

Check this first. Whether you need an ABN or GST registration depends on your circumstances. This is general information, not tax advice; confirm with the ATO or a registered tax agent.

FAQ

Is Amazon Seller Central free to sign up for in Australia? There is no charge to start the Individual plan, which costs A$0.99 per item sold, excluding GST. The Professional plan is A$49.95 a month plus GST, charged once registration is complete and verified.

Can I register with a personal Amazon account? Amazon lists a business email or an existing Amazon customer account as accepted for registration. A separate email is tidier for a business.

Do I need a business name to register? The form asks for a business name and Amazon's guidance is for individuals to select "None, I am an individual" if the business is not incorporated. Registering a business name with ASIC is a separate legal question; ask a registered tax agent or the ASIC.

Can I register on a phone? Amazon does not say either way publicly. The video verification option needs a camera and your ID in view during the call.

Why was my registration rejected? Amazon does not publish a list of rejection reasons. Common causes are details that do not match the ID, expired or old documents and unclear images. Fix the document and resubmit, or contact Seller Support from inside Seller Central.

Can I register for more than one Amazon marketplace? Amazon offers merged global accounts covering North America, Europe, Japan and Australia, and offers must be created per marketplace. See Amazon global selling from Australia.
