Every seller on Amazon.com.au must verify their identity. You submit a government-issued photo ID and proof of address, plus business documents if you sell as a company, then complete either Instant Identity Verification or a Persona video call. Amazon says verification "usually takes four business days or less" and that you will be told the outcome by email. Most failures come from details that do not match, old documents or poor images, and all of those are fixable.

What are the two verification methods?
Amazon's registration guide offers two methods.
| Method | How it works | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Instant Identity Verification | You take a photo of your face and a photo of your government-issued ID | Quick, if your ID is clear and you have good light |
| Video Screening Verification | A video call, run by Amazon and its provider Persona, using images and video; your ID must be on hand during the call | Sellers whose instant check fails or who prefer a live check |
Amazon describes the video call as one of the two options, not only a fallback. For either method use a quiet room, a plain background, your ID in good light and a device with a working camera.
What documents do individuals need?
An individual seller needs a government-issued photo ID (passport, driver's licence or photo ID card, valid and unexpired) and proof of address dated within the last 180 days. Amazon does not list the specific documents that count as proof of address publicly. Seller Central shows the accepted types when you upload, so follow that list.
If you are a sole trader or otherwise unincorporated, you choose "None, I am an individual" as your business type, so the individual document set applies.
What documents do business sellers need?
A seller with a registered legal entity needs four items: government-issued photo ID, a business verification document, proof of authorisation to represent the company, and proof of address dated within 180 days that shows the business or entity name. Accepted business verification documents include an ABN or ACN extract, GST registration, a certificate of good standing, a business licence, a tax clearance or a chamber of commerce statement.
Amazon also asks whether you are a beneficial owner, a legal representative or both. A beneficial owner is someone who directly or indirectly owns more than 25% of the shares or voting rights; if nobody qualifies, a senior manager is treated as one. Your ABN position is covered in ABN for Amazon sellers.
What file rules do your uploads need to meet?
Amazon's rules for every document are:
- valid and unexpired;
- in an accepted language, or with a notarised translation;
- high-resolution and unaltered, with password protection removed;
- under 50 MB;
- in TIF, TIFF, PNG, JPG, JPEG or PDF format.
Photograph documents flat on a plain surface, with all four corners and all text in frame and no glare. A scan beats a photo where you can. Do not crop, edit or annotate.
How long does verification take?
Amazon says registration can be done "in just a few hours" and verification usually takes four business days or less. Amazon says additional identity documents may be required in some cases. If you hear nothing after five business days, check your spam folder and Seller Central for a request before contacting Seller Support. The Professional fee is charged once registration is complete and your information is verified.
Why does verification fail, and what do you do?
Amazon does not publish a full list of reasons. The usual causes, and the fix for each:
- Name or date of birth differs from the ID. Correct the registration details to match the ID exactly.
- Proof of address too old. Use a document dated within 180 days.
- Blurry, cropped or edited image. Retake it to the file rules above.
- Business name not on the proof of address. For business sellers, the address document must show the business or entity name.
- Expired ID. Use a passport, driver's licence or photo ID card that is valid and unexpired.
- Instant check fails. Try the video screening option if Seller Central offers it.
If it keeps failing, contact Seller Support from within Seller Central and quote your case. Do not pay anyone who promises to "fast-track" or "bypass" verification.
Check this first. Amazon will never need your password, one-time codes or a payment to verify you. Scammers pose as Amazon verification teams. Only upload documents inside Seller Central, and read Amazon seller scams in Australia.
What should you do before you press submit?
Run a short pre-flight check. It takes ten minutes and avoids most rejections.
- Put your ID, proof of address and registration form side by side. Names, dates of birth and addresses must agree.
- Check every expiry date and the date on the proof of address.
- Confirm the file type and size against the rules above.
- Decide which method you will use and, for video, test your camera and lighting.
- For a company, confirm the person registering is named on the authorisation document.
A business seller's verification document can be an ABN or ACN extract. Pull the extract fresh from the Australian Business Register instead of using an old copy, so the entity name matches the one on your form. If your ABN is new, see ABN for Amazon sellers first.
Does verification cost anything?
Verification itself has no listed fee. Amazon charges the Professional fee of A$49.95 a month plus GST once registration is complete and your information is verified, and the Individual plan costs A$0.99 per item sold, excluding GST. Anyone charging a separate fee to "verify" you is not Amazon. Keep copies of everything you submit, along with the date and the method you used, so that if Seller Support asks what you uploaded, you can answer quickly and consistently without guessing.
Is verification a one-off?
Amazon's public pages do not say how often it re-checks sellers. Keep your documents current and the contact details in your account up to date, so you can respond if a request arrives. Registration steps are in the registration walkthrough, and the wider checklist is on the requirements page.
FAQ
Is identity verification compulsory for Amazon sellers in Australia? Yes. Amazon says every seller must complete identity verification to register on the Australian store, whatever the selling plan, whether Individual or Professional, and whether you sell as a person or a company.
How long does Amazon seller verification take in Australia? Usually four business days or less, according to Amazon, and sometimes the whole registration takes only a few hours. It can run longer if Amazon asks for more documents.
What ID does Amazon accept in Australia? A passport, a driver's licence or a photo ID card is accepted, as long as it is valid and unexpired. Documents in another language need a notarised translation, and copies must be unaltered and high-resolution.
Can I verify with a video call? Yes. Video Screening Verification is run by Amazon and Persona, and your ID must be available during the call.
Do I need a utility bill? Amazon asks for proof of address dated within 180 days. Amazon's public pages do not list the accepted document types, so follow the list shown when you upload.
Do I need to be an Australian citizen? The form asks for your citizenship and country of birth, but Amazon's public pages do not state a citizenship requirement. Non-Australian sellers are told to select the country where their business is registered and supply documents in an accepted language.
