On Amazon.com.au, products that could be dangerous goods (hazmat), such as batteries, aerosols, flammable liquids and some cosmetics or cleaning products, may be reviewed and restricted from FBA. Amazon says hazardous goods that do not meet fulfilment centre requirements are a reason to fulfil yourself, and dangerous goods are prohibited from Amazon SEND. Amazon publishes its Australian documentation rules inside Seller Central, so this page covers what is public and what to check there.

Amazon Dangerous Goods and Hazmat in Australia: What Gets Flagged, What to Provide and Your Options
By Blooprint team · Published 20 October 2026 · 6 min read
Key takeaways
- Amazon names hazardous goods that do not meet fulfilment centre requirements as a standard reason to fulfil yourself (FBM) instead of using FBA, so a flagged product is not the end of the listing.
- Dangerous goods are prohibited from Amazon SEND, so stock from China that contains batteries, aerosols, flammables or similar must travel with your own carrier.
- Amazon's full Australian dangerous goods documentation rules sit inside Seller Central, so expect to be asked for a safety data sheet or an exemption sheet and check the exact list there.
- Amazon's classification is separate from Australian import and product safety law; the ABF lists hazardous goods as a prohibited or restricted category, and button batteries have their own standards.

What counts as dangerous goods on Amazon?
Amazon classifies a product as dangerous goods when its physical or chemical properties make it a risk in storage or transport. The finished, packaged product is what gets assessed, not just its ingredients. Common categories sellers meet:
- Batteries and battery-powered products, especially lithium.
- Aerosols and pressurised containers, such as sprays and canned air.
- Flammable liquids and solids, including some fragrances, nail products, solvents and lighters.
- Corrosive, toxic or oxidising items, such as some cleaning chemicals.
- Magnets and other items that Amazon treats as regulated for transport.
This list is a guide to what is commonly flagged, not Amazon's official list. Amazon publishes its Australian dangerous goods identification page only inside Seller Central, so check the review process and any exemption routes in your own account. Amazon does not publish a fixed review timeline on its public Australian pages.
How do you find out whether your product is flagged?
You usually find out in one of three ways: a message when you create the listing, a notice in Seller Central that your ASIN needs dangerous goods information, or stock arriving at a fulfilment centre and being held. Check these places:
- The notifications and Account Health areas in Seller Central (see account health rating).
- The FBA inventory view, where flagged items may show as unfulfillable or unavailable.
- The Manage dangerous goods classification or similar tool, if your account shows it.
Amazon US help says if inventory is already in a fulfilment centre when a product is flagged, there is a deadline to provide documents, after which unsubmitted stock can be disposed of at the seller's cost. Amazon does not publish the Australian deadline publicly, so look for it in the notice. A flagged listing can also be a suppressed listing.
What documents does Amazon ask for?
Expect one or both of these.
- A safety data sheet (SDS). A manufacturer document for chemical products covering hazards, handling and transport classification. It should match the exact product, name and quantity on your listing. A range-wide SDS can be rejected for a single ASIN, according to seller reports.
- An exemption sheet. A signed declaration for products that look hazardous but are not, for example some battery-powered goods or products with no harmful chemicals.
- Test reports or transport classification, for example battery test summaries, where Amazon asks for them.
Because the exact list and format for Amazon.com.au are in Seller Central, download the current templates from there and send them to your supplier early. Ask your supplier for the SDS before you place an order, not after stock has landed.
Why can't you ship dangerous goods with Amazon SEND?
Amazon's SEND page says dangerous goods are prohibited from the program and must travel with your own carrier. If your carton includes one battery-powered unit, check whether it is classed as dangerous goods. Mixed cartons and consolidated shipments make this easy to get wrong.
Moving dangerous goods by air or sea normally needs a carrier or forwarder that accepts them, correct marking and labelling, and shipping documents. Transport rules for dangerous goods are set by the carrier and the relevant authorities, and they vary by mode. Ask your forwarder what they require, and get it in writing before packing. See shipping from China to Amazon FBA.
What are your options if a product is flagged?
| Option | What it means | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Provide the documents | Submit an SDS or exemption sheet and wait for classification | Documents must match the exact product |
| Fulfil it yourself (FBM) | Keep stock in your own premises and ship orders yourself | Amazon states FBM suits hazardous goods that do not meet FBA requirements |
| Change the product | Reformulate or repackage, such as a different battery type | New classification, new documents |
| Drop the product | Stop selling it | Remove stock under Amazon's removal process; see removal and disposal fees |
If you choose FBM, read the FBA vs FBM guide and Amazon FBM with Australia Post. Carriers have their own dangerous goods rules, including Australia Post, so check the carrier's current list before you promise a delivery time.
How does Australian law fit with Amazon's rules?
Amazon's classification is a marketplace rule. Australian law applies separately.
- Import. The ABF's prohibited and restricted goods categories include hazardous goods and consumer products, and importers must show permission from the relevant agency. Commercial imports of industrial chemicals, or products containing them, must be registered with AICIS, which involves an annual fee.
- Product safety. Some consumer goods have mandatory standards. For button or coin batteries, the packaging standard requires child-resistant packaging for applicable batteries and warnings on the pack. See button battery standards and product safety on Amazon Australia.
- Electrical goods. Mains-powered products can need RCM compliance; see RCM for electrical products.
This is general information, not legal advice; confirm with the ABF, the product safety regulator or a lawyer.
How do you avoid dangerous goods problems before you buy stock?
Most problems are cheaper to prevent at the sourcing stage than to fix at the fulfilment centre.
- Screen at product selection. Before you commit to a supplier, ask whether the product contains a battery, liquid, gel, powder, aerosol, magnet or heating element. Add a "dangerous goods?" column to your product sheet.
- Get documents in the quote stage. Ask for an SDS, battery test summary or written statement that the product is not regulated, and check the document names the same product, model and pack size you will list.
- Match listing and document. Product name, quantity per pack and ingredients on the listing should agree with the sheet, since inconsistent data is a common reason for delays.
- Split mixed cartons. Never pack a battery product in a carton of ordinary goods going by Amazon SEND.
- Budget for FBM. If a product may not clear FBA, price it with your own fulfilment cost from the start. The FBA fees guide shows what you would otherwise pay Amazon.
- Keep a file. Store each SKU's documents, test reports and Amazon correspondence together so you can answer a request quickly.
FAQ
What is hazmat on Amazon? Hazmat, or dangerous goods, is Amazon's term for products whose properties make them a risk in storage or transport, such as lithium batteries and aerosols. Amazon may restrict them from FBA until it receives and accepts documents, and some are not eligible for FBA at all.
Can I sell dangerous goods on Amazon Australia? Often yes, through FBM. Amazon says hazardous goods that do not meet fulfilment centre requirements can be fulfilled by the seller. Some items are prohibited from sale entirely, so check restricted categories in Seller Central.
What is an SDS? A safety data sheet is a manufacturer document that describes a chemical product's hazards and handling. Amazon may ask for one to classify a product, and it should match your exact item and quantity. Ask your supplier to provide it before purchase.
Can I send lithium batteries to FBA from China? Not by Amazon SEND, which prohibits dangerous goods. You would need your own forwarder that accepts them, correct documents and Amazon's approval for the product to go into FBA.
How long does Amazon's dangerous goods review take? Amazon does not publish a fixed timeline for this, so check the notice in Seller Central and plan your launch with slack.
What happens to flagged stock already at a fulfilment centre? Amazon US help describes a deadline to submit documents, after which unsubmitted stock may be disposed of at the seller's cost. Check the Australian deadline in your notice and remove stock before it expires if you cannot comply.
