Fulfilment by Amazon is the model where your stock sits in an Amazon warehouse and Amazon picks, packs, ships, handles the customer and takes the return. Amazon's own description is that FBA "is an all-in-one solution to sell your products to Amazon customers", and the reason sellers use it is the Prime badge and the delivery speed that comes with it. The reason sellers leave it is storage on stock that did not sell. This guide sets out every FBA fee on Amazon.in as of September 2026, the Send to Amazon workflow for getting stock in, what storage and aged inventory cost, how removals work, and a worked rupee example that shows when FBA beats Easy Ship and when it does not. Fee figures are from Amazon's fees-and-pricing page; the full referral and closing tables are in our Amazon seller fees guide.

What does FBA include, and what does Amazon promise?
Once inventory is received, Amazon stores it, packs each order, delivers it, provides customer service and processes returns into the warehouse. Listings fulfilled by Amazon show the Prime badge, which Amazon says gives customers "fast, free shipping and reliable customer service", and they qualify for same-day and next-day delivery where Amazon offers it and for Prime Day and other events. Amazon's FBA page says there are "no additional subscription fees, no minimum units, and no start-up fees", that FBA reaches 99% of India's pin codes and that cash on delivery is supported.
What FBA does not include: Amazon does not manage your pricing, listings or ads, does not prepare non-compliant stock for you (labelling and poly-bagging are your job unless you pay for FBA prep), and does not decide how much to send. Those decisions are what separate profitable FBA accounts from ones paying storage on dead stock, and they are what our Amazon account management team spends most of its FBA time on.
What are the FBA fee components on Amazon.in?
Amazon's formula is "Profit = Selling Price minus (Referral Fee + Closing Fee + Weight Handling Fee + Other Applicable Fees + Product Cost)". For FBA the "other applicable fees" are pick and pack, storage and removal. All figures below are before the 18% GST Amazon adds to every fee.
| Fee | FBA rate, September 2026 | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Referral fee | By category; 0% on most items up to Rs 1,000 | Same on every channel |
| Closing fee | Rs 27 (up to Rs 300), Rs 23 (Rs 301 to 500), Rs 30 (Rs 501 to 1,000), Rs 55 above Rs 1,000; Rs 75 for select categories | Raised 7 September 2026; Groups A to D get lower rates in the two lowest bands |
| Weight handling, first 500 g | Rs 39 regional, Rs 65 national | Higher of actual and volumetric weight; local rates are lower again |
| Weight handling, 500 g to 1 kg | Rs 54 regional, Rs 85 national | Then Rs 24 or Rs 34 per extra kg to 5 kg |
| Pick and pack | Rs 17 per standard unit up to 1 kg; Rs 5 per extra kg to 5 kg; Rs 2 per extra 5 kg; Rs 26 heavy and bulky | Per unit sold |
| Storage | Rs 50 per cubic foot per month | Charged on space occupied |
| Removal | Rs 10 per unit standard shipping; Rs 30 expedited; Rs 100 heavy and bulky | To return stock to you or dispose of it |
Two things to note. First, Amazon's FBA programme page still shows an illustrative example with a Rs 11 pick and pack fee and Rs 3 per cubic foot storage; those figures are older than the fees-and-pricing page, which is the one Amazon says governs, so plan on Rs 17 and Rs 50. Second, heavy and bulky items (over 22.5 kg, any side over 183 cm, or goods like fridges) use a separate weight handling card starting at Rs 110 local, Rs 160 regional and Rs 300 national for the first 12 kg.
What is the new-seller FBA offer?
Amazon's fee page says "You can Try FC at no additional cost for 1st 3 months/100 units". The FBA page spells it out for first-time FBA sellers, for the first 100 units or 3 months, whichever comes first: transportation to the fulfilment centre is free, capped at Rs 1,000; storage is free; removal charges are free. Referral, closing and weight handling fees still apply. The offer is designed for exactly the test we recommend: send 50 to 100 units of your best two or three SKUs, watch sell-through for a month, and only then send a real consignment.
How does Send to Amazon work?
Amazon's FBA page gives the outline: register and list, "Join FBA in Seller Central and add Amazon Fulfillment Centers as Additional Place of Business", ship products to the fulfilment centre, and Amazon does the rest. The detailed workflow in Seller Central is called Send to Amazon, and it runs like this:
- APOB first. Each fulfilment centre you send to must be listed as an additional place of business on your GST registration, because your stock is legally held there. Amazon provides the FC addresses and a no-objection certificate for the GST amendment. Do this before you create a shipment; it is the step that stalls most first consignments. See APOB.
- Convert listings to FBA. In Manage Inventory, change the fulfilment channel on the SKUs you will send from merchant-fulfilled to Amazon-fulfilled. The listing goes inactive until stock is received, so keep an Easy Ship SKU live in parallel if you need continuity.
- Create the shipment. Send to Amazon asks for the SKUs and quantities, whether units are individually packed or in case packs, box dimensions and weights, and which prep is needed (poly bag, bubble wrap, expiry labels). Amazon assigns the destination FC; you cannot always pick the nearest.
- Label. Every unit needs an FNSKU barcode unless the listing is eligible for manufacturer barcodes. Every box needs the shipment label Amazon generates. Mislabelled boxes are refused or delayed at the dock.
- Book transport. Choose an Amazon partnered carrier, where the charge is estimated in the workflow and billed to your account, or your own transporter. Book an appointment slot for the FC.
- Track receiving. Once the FC checks in the boxes, units become fulfillable inventory over a few days. Discrepancies show in the shipment's reconciliation view, and you can raise a claim for units Amazon counts short.
What do storage and aged inventory cost?
Storage is Rs 50 per cubic foot per month, charged on the space your units occupy. A cubic foot is about 28 litres, so a kurti in a poly bag (roughly 0.03 cubic feet) costs about Rs 1.50 a month; a 30 cm cube box of crockery (about 0.95 cubic feet) costs about Rs 47.50 a month. Storage is small per unit and large in total when you have 2,000 units that sell 100 a month.
Amazon's public fees-and-pricing page does not list a separate long-term storage fee for India as of September 2026, and we will not quote one. What Amazon does do is show inventory age in the FBA Inventory dashboard and prompt removals on units older than a set number of days, and its Seller Central help pages describe aged-inventory charges that can apply to units stored beyond a year. Treat any unit older than 90 days as a decision: discount it, advertise it, or remove it. Check the current aged-inventory terms in your Seller Central before sending slow movers.
How do removals work?
A removal order tells Amazon to ship units back to your address (Rs 10 per standard unit on standard shipping, Rs 30 expedited, Rs 100 heavy and bulky) or dispose of them. Removals take days to weeks to process and cannot be cancelled once picked. Customer returns that come back unsellable also sit in inventory as "unfulfillable" until you remove them, and they attract storage while they wait. A monthly removal of unfulfillable units is basic FBA hygiene.
When does FBA beat Easy Ship?
The comparison is per delivered order plus what happens to the units that do not sell. Per delivered order, on a Rs 999 product weighing 800 g in a 6.5% referral category, delivered regionally, as of September 2026:
| Line | FBA | Easy Ship |
|---|---|---|
| Referral fee | Rs 64.94 | Rs 64.94 |
| Closing fee | Rs 30 | Rs 48 |
| Weight handling | Rs 54 | Rs 75 |
| Pick and pack | Rs 17 | Nil |
| GST at 18% | Rs 29.87 | Rs 33.83 |
| Total | Rs 195.81 | Rs 221.77 |
FBA is Rs 25.96 cheaper per delivered order here, plus the Prime badge and the conversion that comes with it. Now add storage. Say the packed unit occupies 0.1 cubic feet, so storage is Rs 5 per unit per month plus GST, Rs 5.90. If you send 300 units and sell 100 a month, average stock is about 150 units for three months: 150 x Rs 5.90 x 3 = Rs 2,655, or Rs 8.85 per unit sold. FBA still wins by about Rs 17 a unit. If instead you sell 30 a month, the 300 units take ten months to clear, average stock is 150 units for ten months, storage is Rs 8,850, or Rs 29.50 per unit sold, and FBA now loses by Rs 3.54 per unit before removals. The rule that falls out: FBA pays when stock turns in under about four months; below that, use Easy Ship or send smaller consignments more often.
Other cases where FBA wins regardless of the arithmetic: SKUs where the Prime badge changes conversion (gifts, electronics accessories, anything bought in a hurry), and national shipping, where FBA's regional placement can cut weight handling. Cases where Easy Ship wins: slow, bulky or seasonal stock, and any SKU still being tested. Run both through the fee calculator with your own weight and turn rate.
What mistakes do FBA sellers make?
- Creating a shipment before the APOB amendment is through, then having stock refused at the dock.
- Sending a season of stock at once and paying storage on the tail.
- Guessing box dimensions; Amazon re-measures and bills on the higher figure.
- Leaving unfulfillable returns in inventory for months.
- Comparing FBA to Easy Ship on delivery fees alone, without storage and removals.
- Treating the free three months as free forever and never re-running the numbers.
FAQ
What does FBA cost in India? On top of referral, closing and weight handling fees, FBA adds pick and pack at Rs 17 per standard unit, storage at Rs 50 per cubic foot per month and removals at Rs 10 per unit, all plus 18% GST, as of September 2026.
Is there a monthly fee for FBA? No. Amazon says FBA has no subscription, minimum units or start-up fee; you pay per unit sold and per cubic foot stored.
Do I need to change my GST registration for FBA? Yes. Each Amazon fulfilment centre holding your stock must be added as an additional place of business on your GSTIN before Amazon accepts the shipment.
Is FBA cheaper than Easy Ship? Per delivered order, usually: Rs 195.81 against Rs 221.77 on the Rs 999 example. Storage on slow stock can erase the gap, so FBA pays on SKUs that turn within about four months.
Does Amazon India charge long-term storage fees? The public fees-and-pricing page lists no separate long-term storage fee as of September 2026. Aged-inventory terms are set out in Seller Central; check them before storing slow movers for more than a few months.
What is the Try FBA offer? First-time FBA sellers get free inbound transport capped at Rs 1,000, free storage and free removals for their first 100 units or 3 months, whichever comes first.
