What is Big Billion Days (Flipkart)?

The Big Billion Days is Flipkart's biggest annual sale, held before Diwali, in which participating sellers offer discounts and Flipkart drives peak traffic; the 2026 edition opens 8 October.

The Big Billion Days, or BBD, is Flipkart's flagship festive sale, first run in 2014 and now the anchor of the Indian e-commerce calendar alongside Amazon's Great Indian Festival. It runs for around a week in late September or early October, timed ahead of Dussehra and Diwali, and for most Flipkart sellers it produces the largest sales days of the year. Flipkart announced the 2026 edition on 16 September with the campaign "Luck Badal Sakta Hai, Yahan Kuch Bhi Ho Sakta Hai"; early-bird deals started on 24 September, Flipkart Plus, Flipkart Black and co-branded card members get 24-hour early access from midnight on 8 October, and the sale opens to everyone on 9 October 2026. Flipkart says it has more than 1.4 million active sellers including Shopsy, and it created about 2.5 lakh seasonal jobs for this festive season.

How Big Billion Days works for sellers

Participation is by invitation and nomination through Seller Hub, usually opening four to six weeks before the event. Sellers nominate FSNs with a sale price and Flipkart accepts them subject to the discount being meaningful, the listing meeting catalogue and rating standards, and stock being committed. Flipkart typically runs a tiered structure: deals that appear in event banners and "deal of the day" slots need deeper discounts and are limited, while any listing can carry an event price. Several rules change for the event window as of 2026:

  • Fees: Flipkart has in past years published event-period rate cards; the commission structure is normally unchanged, but shipping and fixed fees can differ and are shown in Seller Hub before the event.
  • Returns: Flipkart's SPF timelines shorten. Returns must reach the seller within 45 days of approval during BBD rather than the usual 60, and the 14-day SPF claim window is unchanged.
  • Operations: Flipkart caps FBF inbound close to the event and asks Non-FBF sellers to confirm dispatch capacity; ready-to-dispatch breaches during BBD count fully towards seller tier for the quarter.
  • Ads: PLA and PCA auctions get far more competitive. CPCs in fashion and electronics rise sharply, and campaigns that exhaust their daily budget by mid-morning miss the peak evening hours.

Worked example: a kitchenware seller normally sells 60 units a day of a ₹1,499 mixer jar at 8% margin after fees and ads. For BBD she prices at ₹1,199, taking margin to 2%, and commits 2,500 units. Over the event she sells 2,200 units at ₹1,199 for ₹26.4 lakh of sales and roughly ₹53,000 of profit, against about ₹50,000 she would have made in a normal week at full price. The direct profit is similar; the gain is 2,200 new customers, 300 new ratings and a sales-velocity boost that lifts organic rank for the following two months.

Why Big Billion Days matters

BBD is when Flipkart spends its marketing budget, when shoppers who bought nothing all year buy a phone and a wardrobe, and when sales velocity resets rankings for the festive quarter. A seller who sits out is invisible for the week and enters Diwali with worse rank than competitors who took part. The risks are real too: deep discounts on thin margins, stock-outs that cancel orders and damage tier, and a wave of returns in the weeks after. Sellers new to Flipkart should prepare a small, well-stocked participation rather than a large one.

How to prepare for Big Billion Days

  • Nominate early and selectively. Put your best-rated, best-stocked FSNs forward; a mediocre listing at a deep discount just generates returns.
  • Price from the fee sheet, including event shipping rates and expected returns, not from the discount Flipkart suggests.
  • Stock four to six weeks of cover and get FBF inbound done before the cut-off; a mid-event stock-out is a cancellation.
  • Raise ad budgets by two to three times and set bids in advance; Smart ROI campaigns handle intra-day swings better than manual ones during the event.
  • Staff the returns desk for the fortnight after. The SPF 14-day window does not stretch for BBD volumes.
