What is CTR (Click-Through Rate)?

CTR (Click-Through Rate) is clicks divided by impressions, expressed as a percentage; it measures how often shoppers who see an ad actually click it.

CTR, or click-through rate, tells you how appealing an ad or listing is at a glance. Amazon, Flipkart, Myntra and the quick-commerce apps all report it for sponsored campaigns, and Amazon's Brand Analytics reports it for search results generally. A low CTR means shoppers are seeing your product tile and scrolling past; a high CTR means the image, title, price and rating are winning attention against the tiles around it.

How CTR is calculated

CTR = (clicks ÷ impressions) × 100. An impression is counted whenever the ad is served on a page, whether or not the shopper scrolls to it.

Worked example: a Sponsored Products campaign for a yoga mat gets 50,000 impressions and 210 clicks in a week. CTR = 210 ÷ 50,000 × 100 = 0.42%. If the seller improves the main image and CTR rises to 0.6%, the same impressions yield 300 clicks, and at ₹8 CPC and 10% conversion that is 9 extra orders a week without changing the bid.

What a good CTR looks like

Amazon does not publish benchmarks. Across Indian accounts we manage, Sponsored Products campaigns commonly run between 0.3% and 0.6% CTR, with exact-match branded keywords far higher and automatic campaigns lower. Sponsored Brands headline placements tend to earn more clicks per impression than product-page placements. Treat these as rough context, not targets; the meaningful comparison is your own CTR across keywords and placements. A keyword with many impressions and a CTR near zero is either irrelevant or losing to a cheaper, better-rated competitor, and is a candidate for a negative keyword or a bid cut.

CTR feeds directly into cost. Amazon's guides note that higher CTR tends to lower CPC and improve ACoS, because the auction rewards ads shoppers find relevant. It also matters organically: search results are ranked partly on how often shoppers click and buy a listing for a query.

How to improve CTR

  • Fix the main image first. A clean white-background shot that fills the frame, showing the product at the right angle, is the single biggest lever.
  • Put the buying words early in the title. Shoppers on mobile see roughly the first 60 to 70 characters; lead with product type, key spec and size.
  • Stay price-competitive in the search results. A tile that is ₹100 above its neighbours gets skipped regardless of the ad.
  • Build rating count. A 4.3-star tile with 1,200 ratings out-clicks a 4.6 with 12.
  • Tighten targeting. Move from broad to phrase and exact so the ad appears only for queries where it genuinely fits.

Blooprint's catalogue and listing optimisation service works on the image, title and pricing signals that drive CTR, and the Amazon ads guide for India shows where to find the metric in reports.

Frequently asked questions

What does CTR mean?

CTR stands for click-through rate. It is the number of clicks an ad received divided by the number of times it was shown, multiplied by 100. A CTR of 0.5% means five clicks for every thousand impressions.

What is a good CTR for Amazon ads in India?

Amazon publishes no benchmark. Sponsored Products campaigns often run between 0.3% and 0.6%, higher on branded exact keywords and lower on automatic campaigns. Compare your own keywords and placements against each other rather than chasing a fixed number.

Does CTR affect my cost per click?

Yes. Amazon's auction favours relevant ads, and CTR is a strong relevance signal. Ads with higher CTR tend to win placements at a lower CPC and therefore a lower ACoS than ads shoppers ignore.
