An importer code is the customs business code a license holder gets from Dubai Customs to file import declarations in its own name. The published fee is AED 100 for new registration and AED 25 for renewal, plus an AED 20 Knowledge and Innovation fee on services costing AED 50 or more, completed in one working day. Figures are as of October 2026. This is general information; confirm with Dubai Customs.

Who needs one?

The code belongs to the company. A marketplace seller needs it when the company is the importer of record for stock from abroad. A licensed clearing agent can file for you, but needs its own code and your authorisation. If you only buy from UAE distributors, you do not need one.

What documents and steps apply?

Dubai Customs lists a trade license copy, plus passport and Emirates ID copies of the authorised person. You submit the application, pay the fee and receive an email with the registration and code. The full walk-through is in Dubai Customs importer code.

Where does it fit next?

Each shipment is then declared on a bill of entry. Dubai Municipality also lists a valid importer code as a prerequisite for e-commerce companies registering consumer products on Montaji. Duty costs are covered in how customs duty is calculated.

Free zone companies and common mistakes

If you hold a free zone license, registration may run through your zone. A free zone guide says zone companies coordinate registration through their free zone authority. Ask your zone whether it files for you or you apply to Dubai Customs directly.

Common mistakes:

  • Assuming a broker's code covers you. A broker files for you, but the goods are still declared under your authorisation.
  • Using a passport or Emirates ID of someone who is not on the trade license.
  • Expecting the code to remove duty. It identifies you; duty and VAT still apply to the goods.
  • Letting it lapse. Renewal is published at AED 25, so diarise it with your trade license renewal.

The wrong-HS-code fine is a separate cost: Dubai Customs lists AED 500 for a wrong HS code that does not cause a loss of duty.
