Not every ad slot on Amazon is worth the same. The first sponsored row at the top of page one converts far better than a carousel at the bottom of a product page, so a single bid across all placements is either too high for the weak ones or too low for the strong ones. Placement bid adjustment, shown in the campaign manager as "Adjust bids by placement", lets you raise the bid for specific placements without touching the base keyword bids.
How placement bid adjustment works
Sponsored Products reports performance for three placements: top of search (first page), rest of search (sponsored rows further down page one and on later pages) and product pages (detail pages and other non-search placements). For each, you can set an increase of 0% to 900% on top of your base bid; Amazon's announcement of the rest-of-search adjustment confirms the same 900% ceiling for all three. Adjustments only ever increase the bid; there is no negative adjustment, so the base bid is effectively the bid for the placement you want least.
Worked example: a keyword bid is ₹8. With a 100% top-of-search adjustment and 0% elsewhere, the ad enters top-of-search auctions at ₹16 and all other auctions at ₹8. If the campaign uses dynamic bids up and down, Amazon may then raise the ₹16 to ₹32 for a shopper it expects to convert. Set 900% on ₹8 and the top-of-search bid becomes ₹80 before dynamic bidding, which is why the ceiling is rarely used.
Why placement bid adjustment matters for sellers
The placement report often shows a pattern like: top of search 12% conversion and 18% ACoS, rest of search 6% conversion and 30% ACoS, product pages 3% conversion and 45% ACoS. A seller who raises the base bid to win more top-of-search also overpays for the other two. The adjustment lets you pay for the placement that works. During sale events such as the Great Indian Festival, competition for top of search rises sharply, and the adjustment is the cleanest way to hold the slot for a week and then step back.
How to manage placement bid adjustments
- Read the placement report before adjusting. Campaign manager shows impressions, clicks, spend, sales and ACoS by placement over any date range.
- Lower the base bid, then raise the adjustment. To favour top of search, drop the keyword bid 20 to 30% and add a 50 to 100% top-of-search adjustment.
- Start small and step up. Move in 25% increments and wait a week; a 900% jump is almost never justified.
- Check the interaction with dynamic bidding so the combined maximum bid stays within your break-even CPC.
- Revisit after events. Reset festive-season adjustments once the sale ends or CPC will stay inflated.
