Amazon Account Manager in Australia: What the Role Does and How Amazon, Agencies, Freelancers and In-House Hires Compare

By Blooprint team ยท Published 20 October 2026 ยท 7 min read

Key takeaways

  • An Amazon account manager runs your seller account day to day: account health, listings, inventory, pricing, ads and reporting. It is an operating role, not a sales role.
  • You can get one four ways: Amazon's own account support where it is offered, an agency, a freelancer or an in-house hire. Each trades control, cost, depth and risk differently.
  • Amazon's Service Provider Network lists third-party providers and says it does not endorse any of them, so you still have to check references, scope and access yourself.
  • Whoever you choose, you should own the Seller Central account, keep your own login and be able to see every report and setting the manager touches.

An Amazon account manager in Australia is the person responsible for running your Amazon.com.au seller account: keeping account health in range, the catalogue accurate, stock available, prices and promotions current, ads tuned and results reported. You can get one from an agency, a freelancer or an in-house hire, and some sellers may also get account support from Amazon itself. Amazon lists third-party providers in its Service Provider Network but states it does not endorse any of them. Which route fits depends on your catalogue size, ad spend and how much control you want.

What does an Amazon account manager actually do?

The role covers the whole account, not one function. The detailed daily, weekly and monthly task list is in what Amazon account management includes. In short, a manager:

  • Watches account health and policy notices. Amazon's published targets include an order defect rate under 1% and a late shipment rate under 4%.
  • Maintains listings: titles, images, bullets, variations, GTINs and suppressed listings.
  • Plans inventory across FBA and FBM and controls aged stock.
  • Runs advertising. Ads need an active Professional seller account.
  • Reports results in A$ and recommends what to do next.

A manager does not replace your product sourcing, supplier negotiation, tax advice or customer service for your wider business. Make sure the written scope says what is excluded.

Does Amazon provide an account manager for sellers in Australia?

Sometimes, but not on terms you can rely on, and Amazon has not published who qualifies. Amazon publishes help and support channels inside Seller Central, and the new seller guide explains how to run an account yourself. Whether Amazon assigns a named contact to a particular seller is Amazon's decision, and it is not something you can buy or request as a standard service.

Treat any offer from "Amazon" with care. If someone contacts you claiming to be an Amazon account manager and asks for payment, login details or a gift card, see our guide to Amazon seller scams in Australia. Check through Seller Central, not through a link in a message.

If you do have an Amazon contact, they work for Amazon. Their job is Amazon's programmes and targets, and they do not run your day-to-day account for you.

Amazon account manager options compared

Option Best fit Strengths Trade-offs
Agency Growing catalogue, no time or in-house skill Team with several skills, tools, cover for leave Cost, less attention per account, handover risk if you leave
Freelancer Smaller catalogue, one clear need such as ads Direct contact, flexible cost One person: skills gaps, key-person and holiday risk
In-house hire Large catalogue, steady spend Full focus on your brand, full control Salary, super and on-costs, training time, hard to hire for a single specialist
Amazon support Any seller Included with selling, official policy answers General, not a managed service

Amazon publishes no fee for any of these services, so any pricing you see comes from the provider. Ask for the scope in writing and compare the same scope across options. Our Amazon PPC agency vs in-house guide goes deeper on the ads side of the decision.

How does an agency differ from a freelancer?

An agency sells a service through a business. A freelancer sells their own time. The practical differences are:

  1. Continuity. An agency can cover leave and staff changes. A freelancer cannot, unless they have a partner they trust.
  2. Range of skill. Listings, ads, logistics and brand work are different skills. A team can split them. A freelancer usually has one strength.
  3. Process. Agencies tend to have standard reporting and audit routines. Ask to see a sample report with client details removed.
  4. Accountability. With a registered business you can check the ABN on the Australian Business Register's ABN Lookup, which shows whether an ABN is active or cancelled. A freelancer may be a sole trader with an ABN, which you can check the same way.
  5. Fit. Small catalogues often get more attention from a freelancer. Larger or multi-channel operations usually outgrow one person.

Neither is better in general. Choose on references and scope, not size. The next guide, how to choose an Amazon agency in Australia, covers verification and contract questions in detail.

What does an in-house Amazon account manager cost?

We cannot give a salary range here without a primary source we can cite, so we are not quoting one. What you can do is cost the role yourself. Add the base salary, superannuation, leave, payroll tax where it applies, software and tools, and the time you spend training and supervising. Then compare that to the written scope and fee of an agency or freelancer. Include the cost of the role being vacant when the person leaves.

An in-house hire makes sense when the catalogue is large enough to keep one person fully occupied and you can give them a clear plan. Before that point, many sellers use a freelancer or agency and hire later. This page is general information and not employment, tax or legal advice. Confirm obligations with the Fair Work Ombudsman, the ATO or a registered tax agent.

How do you check an Amazon provider is listed or has partner status?

Two public Amazon directories exist. Neither is a guarantee of quality.

Service Provider Network (SPN). SPN connects sellers with third-party providers in categories such as accounting, cataloguing, imaging and FBA preparation. You choose the country where you are located and the country where you want to sell, then pick a service category or search. Amazon says contracts are made directly with the provider and that it does not endorse any provider. The SPN page for sellers says providers must meet a pre-defined criterion to be listed, and it shows verified peer reviews. It does not explain what the criterion is, so read the reviews and ask for references.

Amazon Ads partner directory. Amazon Ads runs a partner status programme with two levels, advanced and verified, and advertisers can see partners with status in the partner directory. Australia is among the regions listed for the programme. Partner status concerns Amazon Ads skills, so it says little about listing or inventory work.

Ask the provider for the exact listing name and look it up yourself. Do not rely on a badge on their website.

Which questions should you ask an Amazon account manager?

  • Who will do my daily work, and what is their experience on Amazon.com.au?
  • Which tasks are in scope, and which cost extra?
  • Whose name is on the Seller Central and Amazon Ads accounts, and what permission level will you need?
  • What do you report each month, and can I see a sample?
  • Which targets will we agree, in A$ and in account health?
  • How do you handle a policy warning or a listing suppression?
  • What is the notice period, and what happens to the account and data when we stop?
  • Do you manage competing brands in my category, and how do you handle that?

A good provider answers plainly and in writing. A vague answer to the access question is a reason to walk away.

FAQ

Is an Amazon account manager the same as an Amazon seller support agent? No. Seller Support answers questions about Amazon's policies and tools. An account manager works for you or your provider and runs the account day to day. Support is general. A manager acts on your specific products, stock and ads.

Can I give an agency my Seller Central login? Avoid it. Give them their own user with limited permissions, so you can remove access at any time. Registration ties the account to your business details and your verified identity, and sharing your own login breaks that link.

Do I need a Professional account to hire an account manager? Not to hire one, but ads need an active Professional account, and Professional is the plan Amazon points sellers to at over 50 items a month. The Professional plan costs A$49.95 a month excluding GST.

What is an Amazon SPN verified partner? Amazon's Service Provider Network lists providers who meet its listing criteria. Amazon states that it does not endorse providers, so treat a listing as a starting point and ask for references.

Is it better to hire a freelancer or an agency? It depends on your catalogue and risk tolerance. Freelancers are often cheaper and more direct but depend on one person. Agencies add cover and range. Compare scope, references and access terms, not the label.

Can an account manager guarantee rankings or sales? No. Amazon controls search results and the Buy Box, and no outside party can guarantee a position. Treat a guarantee as a red flag.
