Choosing an Amazon agency

How to Choose an Amazon Agency in Australia: Verifying Partner Status, Account Ownership, Reporting, Contracts and Red Flags

By Blooprint team · Published 20 October 2026 · 7 min read

Key takeaways

  • Choose an Amazon agency on verifiable facts: a listing in Amazon's Service Provider Network or Amazon Ads partner directory, references, a written scope and clear account ownership.
  • Amazon says it does not endorse providers listed in its Service Provider Network, so a listing is a starting point, not proof of quality. Check it yourself rather than trusting a badge.
  • You should own the Seller Central and Amazon Ads accounts, add the agency as a limited user, keep access to all reports and be able to leave with your data.
  • Promises of a guaranteed position, refusal to share access, long lock-in with no exit and reports that show only revenue are the most common red flags.

To choose an Amazon agency in Australia, check five things: that it is listed in Amazon's Service Provider Network (SPN) or Amazon Ads partner directory, that you will own the accounts and keep full access, what the written scope and reporting are, what the contract says about fees and exit, and what past clients say. Amazon states it does not endorse any provider listed in SPN, and that contracts are made directly with the provider. That means the checking is your job. This guide gives you the checks, the questions and the red flags.

What should you decide before you contact an agency?

Agencies sell what they are good at. Decide first what you need, so you can judge fit.

  1. Scope. Full account management, ads only, listings only or FBA logistics. See what account management includes for the task list.
  2. Goal in A$. Profit per product, a launch, a stock clear, or time saved. "Grow sales" is too vague to hold anyone to.
  3. Budget structure. Management fee plus ad spend. Ad spend always goes to Amazon, which bills only when an ad is clicked.
  4. Your access needs. Who must see what. Decide before the sales call.
  5. Alternatives. A freelancer or an in-house hire may fit better. See Amazon account manager options in Australia.

How do you verify an agency's SPN listing?

SPN is Amazon's directory of third-party providers. Amazon describes it as connecting sellers with providers that help launch, manage and grow a business, with providers needing to meet a pre-defined criterion to be listed. Amazon does not explain what the criterion is on that page, so a listing shows the provider passed something, not how good they are.

To verify a listing:

  1. Sign in to Seller Central and open the Service Provider Network (the entry page is https://sellercentral.amazon.com.au/gspn).
  2. Select the country where you are located and the country where you want to sell.
  3. Choose a service category or use the search box, and look for the agency by its exact trading name.
  4. Open the provider listing, read the services described and the peer reviews. Amazon says SPN shows verified peer reviews from sellers.
  5. Compare the name and details with what the agency told you. If it claims a listing you cannot find, ask them to point to it.

Menu labels in Seller Central change, and some of the pages above sit inside Seller Central, so if the steps look different when you sign in, follow the SPN link from Seller Central itself. If an agency says it is "SPN verified" but cannot be found in the directory, treat that as an unanswered question, not a technicality.

How do you check Amazon Ads partner status?

Amazon Ads runs a separate programme for ads partners. It describes partner status as a global recognition programme for Ads Partner Network members, with two levels, advanced and verified, and says advertisers can see partners with status in the partner directory. Australia is among the regions Amazon lists for the programme.

Key points when you check:

  • Search the Amazon Ads partner directory for the agency's name and look for the status badge on its listing. Use the directory's filters for marketplace and service type, and check how they work when you open it.
  • Status concerns Amazon Ads skills only. It says nothing about listing, inventory or account health work.
  • Amazon updates the criteria for status over time. The 2023 update says partners need to meet Product Adoption and Learning Console Certification requirements, with partner-led investment measured by company type. Third-party descriptions of the tiers disagree with each other, so rely on Amazon's pages.
  • Ask the agency which of its team hold certifications and whether those people will work on your account.

Also run a basic business check. The Australian Business Register's ABN Lookup shows whether an ABN is active or cancelled and a business's type and GST position. It takes a minute and confirms the agency is a real, current entity.

Who owns the account, and what access should you keep?

This is the most important section of the guide. Get it in writing before any work starts.

  • You register and own the Seller Central account. Registration asks for your business details, the primary contact's government ID and identity verification. That identity belongs to you.
  • Agencies are added as users with limited permissions. Never share your own login. A separate user lets you remove them in one step.
  • Ads belong to your account too. Campaigns are created from Seller Central's Advertising tab and run in your Professional account. Confirm the same ownership for any separate Amazon Ads console login.
  • Brand Registry stays with the brand owner. Brand Registry requires the applicant to be the trade mark owner. If an agency applies in its own name, you risk losing control of your brand. See Amazon Brand Registry in Australia.
  • You keep the data. Reports, search term data, listing content and images should be yours on exit.
  • Bank account and payments are yours. Amazon pays to a bank account you register, not to a card or online payment system. An agency should never ask for settlements to go to their account.

What should the contract and scope say?

Amazon publishes no standard agency fees, so there is no benchmark to quote. Compare scope and structure instead.

Term What to look for Concern
Fee model Flat fee, percentage of sales or ad spend, or a blend, stated in A$ and whether GST is added Fees that rise with your ad spend without a stated cap
Scope Named tasks and exclusions "Everything Amazon" with no list
Term and exit Notice period, what you hand back and when Long lock-in with no exit
Reporting Format, timing, data access Reports only on request
Access and ownership Your accounts, your data, your brand Accounts opened in the agency's name
Conflicts Whether the agency works for competing brands No answer
Liability What happens if an error causes a loss or suspension Blanket exclusion of all responsibility

State fees as GST-inclusive or exclusive in the contract. This page is general information, not legal advice. Have a lawyer review any agreement that carries a long term or significant spend.

What are the red flags when hiring an Amazon agency?

  • Promised rankings, sales or Buy Box wins. Amazon controls search results and the Buy Box. No outside party can promise a position.
  • Refusal to use limited user access. Asking for your login details is a major warning sign.
  • Accounts opened in the agency's name, or an agency applying for Brand Registry for you.
  • Claims you cannot check. A partner badge that is not in the relevant directory, or case studies with no named reference you can call.
  • Reports with only revenue. Revenue hides loss-making products. Ask for profit by product and ACoS and TACoS.
  • Pressure to sign today, or a discount that disappears tomorrow.
  • Tactics against Amazon's rules, such as paid reviews or review manipulation. Those risk your account. See Amazon reviews policy in Australia.
  • Fee structures that reward spending more. A percentage of ad spend rewards higher spend, not better results. It is not always wrong but needs a cap or a profit target.

Also be careful with unsolicited messages claiming to be from Amazon. See Amazon seller scams in Australia.

How do you compare two or three agencies?

Give each the same one-page brief and ask for the same things in writing: scope, fee, team, sample report and two references. Then score each on:

  1. Does the proposal match your goal in A$?
  2. Can you verify their listings?
  3. Who does the work, and do they have Amazon.com.au experience?
  4. Will you own everything, with limited-user access?
  5. Is the exit clean?

Call the references. Ask what changed in the first 90 days, what went wrong and how the agency handled it. The answer to "what went wrong" tells you more than the sales deck.

FAQ

Is an SPN listing a guarantee of quality? No. Amazon says it does not endorse any provider in the network. A listing means the provider met Amazon's criterion to be listed, which Amazon does not detail. Treat it as one check beside references and a written scope.

What is the difference between SPN and Amazon Ads partner status? SPN is a directory of service providers for seller needs such as accounting, cataloguing and FBA prep. Amazon Ads partner status recognises advertising skill, with advanced and verified levels. They are separate programmes with separate directories.

How much does an Amazon agency cost in Australia? Amazon does not publish what agencies charge, and we have no primary source for a market range, so we are not quoting one. Ask each agency for its fee structure in A$, state whether GST applies, and compare the same scope.

Should I give an agency my Seller Central login? No. Add them as a user with limited permissions. Your login ties to your verified identity, and you want the ability to remove access in one step.

Can an agency guarantee my product will rank first? No. Amazon controls rankings. Anyone promising a position, a sales figure or a Buy Box win is promising something they cannot deliver.

What should happen if I end the contract? You keep your accounts, data, listings and brand. The agency's access is removed, and handover steps and timing are written into the contract before you start.
