Amazon vs eBay vs Kogan Seller Fees in Australia: A Like-for-Like Comparison

By Blooprint team · Published 20 October 2026 · 6 min read

Key takeaways

  • Amazon charges a referral fee by category plus A$49.95 a month excluding GST on Professional; eBay Pro Starter has no monthly fee and an A$0.30 order fee, with final value fees that depend on category tier and plan.
  • Amazon and eBay quote GST differently: Amazon fees exclude GST, eBay fees are shown including GST, so compare after converting both to the same basis.
  • Kogan Marketplace does not publish a seller commission publicly, so no Kogan rate is given here; you get it by applying to Kogan.
  • Fees are only part of cost: Amazon FBA fulfilment and storage, and eBay or Kogan shipping you arrange yourself, can outweigh the commission.

What does Amazon charge?

Amazon charges in layers. The Professional plan is A$49.95 a month excluding GST plus selling fees, while Individual has no monthly fee and charges A$0.99 excluding GST per item sold. Referral fees are a percentage of the total sales price, with no minimum or maximum. Examples from the published table:

  • Home and Kitchen: 13%.
  • Toys and Games: 12%.
  • Consumer Electronics: 8%.
  • Beauty, Health and Personal Care: 8% up to A$20 and 13% above A$20.
  • Everything else: 15%.

All rates are in the referral fees by category guide. If you choose Fulfilment by Amazon, the fulfilment fee is extra: a parcel of 0 to 250 g costs A$7.34 for items at A$13 or more, excluding GST. It covers picking, packing, shipping, customer service and returns. Storage is separate; see FBA fees.

What does eBay Australia charge?

eBay's pages say it is free for Australia-based sellers with up to A$25,000 in sales over the past 12 months to sell on eBay.com.au. Those sellers get 250,000 free listings a month, then A$1.00 including GST per extra listing.

Above that, business sellers use Pro plans. Pro Starter has no monthly fee, and the Pro Basic, Featured and Anchor plans cost A$27.45, A$82.45 and A$604.95 a month including GST. Final value fees fall as you move up plans, and part of a sale over A$4,000 is charged at a lower percentage. We do not quote the percentages here: eBay's table splits categories into tiers, and the 13.4% rate that appears in some eBay searches is also the rate in the table for sellers registered outside Australia on eBay's general selling-fees page, so it is easy to apply the wrong one. Read the current Pro table for your category and plan before comparing. eBay also lists a currency conversion charge of 3% for Australian-registered sellers, rising to 3.25% from 1 November 2026. Use eBay's table for the tier your category sits in.

What does Kogan Marketplace charge?

Kogan does not publish a seller commission publicly. Kogan's supplier pages invite businesses to apply, and third-party seller guides say the commission is set individually during onboarding. Kogan's own fee terms are not public, so we give no figures. Some guides quote a payment processing fee. Treat those as unverified until Kogan confirms them in writing. If you apply, ask for the commission, any payment or listing fees, the GST treatment, payout timing and how returns are handled, in writing.

How do I compare them on the same basis?

Convert everything to the same GST basis first. Amazon quotes its fees excluding GST, and states that Australian GST applies to most items sold on Amazon.com.au. eBay shows fees including GST unless you have given an ABN and registered for tax-exempt status, and says 10% GST is payable on eBay fees for Australian-registered sellers. Whether and how you recover GST on fees depends on your registration; confirm with the ATO or a registered tax agent. This is general information, not tax advice. See GST on Amazon seller fees.

An illustrative A$50 GST-inclusive item in a category with a 13% referral rate on Amazon. The eBay rate below, 12%, is a placeholder only; replace it with the rate in eBay's table for your category and plan:

Line Amazon (FBM, Professional) eBay (Pro Starter)
Commission A$6.50 (13% of A$50, excl. GST) A$6.00 (12% placeholder of A$50, incl. GST)
Order fee none fixed A$0.30 (A$0.33 incl. GST on some plans)
Plan fee A$49.95 a month excl. GST, spread over your orders none on Starter
Fulfilment your own shipping your own shipping

The numbers look similar, but the bases differ. Amazon adds Fulfilment by Amazon if you want it, and eBay's final value fee percentage applies to the sale amount, so check what eBay includes in that amount. Use the Amazon profit calculator for the full Amazon picture.

What does a fee comparison leave out?

  • Shipping and returns. Amazon's FBA fee includes shipping, customer service and returns handling. Elsewhere you pay a carrier and handle returns yourself, so a lower commission can cost more overall.
  • Advertising. Amazon Ads, eBay promoted listings and any Kogan placement are priced separately. On Amazon, ads need an active Professional account.
  • Payment and currency charges. eBay lists a 3% currency conversion charge for Australian-registered sellers. Check what each marketplace charges on payouts.
  • Policy and performance rules. Each marketplace can restrict or penalise sellers with poor performance. That is not a fee you can plan on, but it affects whether you can sell at all, so read each marketplace's seller terms before you commit stock.
  • Your own time. Three marketplaces mean three sets of listings, three inventory counts and three reporting formats. Price that in before adding a channel.

Which has the lowest fees?

It depends on what you sell, how many orders you have and who ships. A low-volume seller of one-off items may pay nothing to list on eBay under its free-selling threshold. A brand with steady volume and a need for Prime delivery may find Amazon's A$49.95 plus referral fee reasonable. Kogan's cost is unknown until you ask. Fees are only one input. The reach of each marketplace, return handling and ad costs matter as much. See Amazon vs eBay for sellers for the strategy side.
