Flipkart PLA vs PCA (2026): Placements, Creative, Targeting, Budgets and When to Use Each

By Blooprint team · Published 25 September 2026 · 8 min read

Key takeaways

  • Flipkart PLA uses your listing tile as the ad across six placements; PCA needs a separate creative and runs in five placements including below the add-to-cart button.
  • PLA is keyword or automatic targeting with exact and phrase match; PCA adds location, device and related-store targeting but caps keywords at 100.
  • Agency guides put the PCA minimum at ₹1,000 a day and typical Flipkart CPCs at ₹1 to ₹5, rising to ₹5 to ₹10 in competitive categories and sales.
  • Run PLA first for search intent; add PCA only once PLA holds a steady ROI and you have reviews, images and a creative worth showing.

Flipkart sells two self-serve ad products to sellers: Product Listing Ads (PLA) and Product Contextual Ads (PCA). Both are paid per click, both are managed from the advertising section of Seller Hub, and both show your products in the same shopping journey. The difference is what the ad looks like, what triggers it and what you can control. This guide compares the two on placements, creative, targeting, budgets and reports, gives a rupee worked example, and ends with a plain rule for which to run first. It is a companion to our broader Flipkart Ads guide, which covers Smart ROI, the Budget Rule, Saarthi and Big Billion Days pacing in more depth. As of September 2026 Flipkart publishes the structure of both products but no click prices or benchmarks; every number below that is not Flipkart's is marked as an agency figure.

Ad spend sits on top of commission, fixed fee and shipping. If you have not worked out your margin after fees, read our Flipkart seller fees guide first; a good ROI on the wrong margin still loses money.

What is the difference between PLA and PCA on Flipkart?

A Product Listing Ad is a sponsored copy of your existing listing tile. There is no creative to design: Flipkart takes the listing image, title, price and rating and marks it as sponsored in a slot that would otherwise show an organic result. The ad is triggered by what the shopper searched or browsed, which is why keywords matter so much.

A Product Contextual Ad is a designed unit. You upload images, titles, callouts and optionally a video, and Flipkart shows it to shoppers whose current context, the page they are on and the products they are comparing, matches your targeting. PCA is closer to a display ad that happens to be shoppable than to a search ad. It is the format for cross-selling, for defending your own product pages and for putting a brand in front of shoppers who are still deciding.

Where does each ad type show?

PlacementPLAPCA
HomepageYesNo
Top of search (slot 1)YesYes
Rest of search pageYesYes
Top of browse (category) pageYesYes
Rest of browse pageYesYes
Product pageYes, in the sponsored stripYes, below the add-to-cart button

So PLA has six placements and PCA five. The two that matter most for the decision are the homepage, which only PLA reaches, and the product-page slot under the add-to-cart button, which is PCA's strongest position because the shopper is one tap from buying a competitor and your ad is the last thing they see before they do. Both products let you bid differently by placement, so you can pay for top of search and starve the rest of the page, or the reverse.

What creative does each need?

PLA needs nothing beyond a good listing. That is also its weakness: if your main image, title and review count are poor, the ad is poor, and Flipkart's auction weighs listing quality alongside bid, so a weak listing pays more per click for a worse slot.

PCA offers four creative types, as documented by agency guides that reproduce Flipkart's ad manager help:

  • Auto creative: up to three images at 800 by 800 pixels and two titles. Flipkart assembles the unit. The easiest place to start.
  • Rich creative: up to five images at 1376 by 448 pixels and three calls to action.
  • Interactive creative: brand logo, up to three background images, two callouts and one call to action.
  • Video creative: a short brand or product video, positioned by Flipkart for storytelling and higher click-through rate.

Every PCA creative goes through review, so build in a few working days before a launch or sale. Rich and interactive units need banner-quality artwork; if you do not have a designer, auto creative with your best three images is the honest choice.

How does targeting differ?

PLAPCA
Keyword targetingExact and phrase match; automatic targeting also availableExact and phrase match, maximum 100 keywords per campaign
Negative keywordsYes; agency guides quote up to 200 exclude keywordsYes, exact match only
Location targetingNoYes
Device targetingNoYes
Related stores targetingNoYes
BiddingManual CPC by ad group and placement, or Smart ROIManual CPC by placement

The practical reading: PLA is about match types and a clean search-term routine. PCA is about context. Location and device targeting are only available on PCA, which makes it the format if you ship from one region, price differently by state, or sell something that only converts on the app. Related-store targeting lets you show your PCA inside stores adjacent to yours, which is how a phone-case brand appears to shoppers browsing phones.

What do PLA and PCA cost, and what is the minimum budget?

Flipkart does not publish click prices or a rate card. Agency guides written for 2026 quote Flipkart CPCs of roughly ₹1 to ₹5 in most categories and ₹5 to ₹10 in competitive ones during sales, with festive weeks running two to three times normal. Both products run on either a daily or a total budget. Agency guides put the PCA floor at ₹1,000 a day or ₹1,000 total, which is higher than the ₹300 to ₹500 they quote as the practical PLA minimum; treat both as guidance and read the figure Seller Hub shows you when you create the campaign.

Ad spend is billed to your seller account, settled against payouts and attracts 18% GST that a registered seller claims as input credit. For most sellers the real budget question is not the floor but how much data a campaign needs before you can judge it. A useful rule: ₹1,000 or more per campaign over two weeks before deciding anything.

Which reports do you get?

PLA reports in Seller Hub are the seller-level, FSN, placement performance, search term, campaign performance and keyword reports. PCA gets the same six plus a seventh, the Product Page Performance report, broken down by product page, search page, browse page and other placements with FSN, ad group and creative ID. That creative ID column is the point of PCA reporting: it tells you which of your uploaded units earns clicks and which is wallpaper. Reports refresh a few times a day; judge on full days, not hours.

A worked example: the same ₹1,000 a day in PLA and PCA

These figures are illustrative, not benchmarks. Take a kitchen product selling at ₹1,200 with a 30% margin after Flipkart fees, so ₹360 of contribution per order and a break-even ROI of about 3.3x.

PLA, exact-match keywordsPCA, product-page placement
Daily budget₹1,000₹1,000
Assumed CPC₹4₹3
Clicks250333
Assumed conversion2.5%1.2%
Orders64
Ad revenue₹7,200₹4,800
ROI7.2x4.8x
Contribution after ad spend₹1,160₹440

Both campaigns clear break-even, but PLA earns nearly three times the profit from the same spend because search intent converts better even at a higher click price. That is the normal pattern and why PLA comes first. PCA's value is different: those 333 clicks came from shoppers who were on a competitor's page or a category page, and a share of them will come back and search for your brand later. If your listing has under about fifteen reviews or fewer than seven images, the PLA column gets worse, not the PCA one, because PCA carries its own creative.

When should you use PLA and when PCA?

  • New listing, no ad history: PLA on automatic targeting for two weeks to harvest search terms, then exact-match PLA on what converted.
  • Established listing with steady PLA ROI: add PCA on product-page placement, targeting the category and your nearest competitors' pages, at a fifth to a quarter of the PLA budget.
  • Launch or festive event with a brand story: PCA rich or video creative on top of search and top of browse, plus PLA at raised bids on your proven terms.
  • Regional seller or state-specific pricing: PCA, because location targeting only exists there.
  • Low-margin FMCG: PLA only, exact match, with a tight negative list; PCA rarely reaches the 6x or higher ROI those margins need.

Never run both on the same product against the same keywords in the same placement; you bid against yourself and the reports become impossible to read.

Common mistakes with PLA and PCA

  1. Starting with PCA because the creative looks better than the listing. Fix the listing first.
  2. Uploading one auto creative and never testing another; the creative ID report exists for a reason.
  3. Bidding the same amount across all placements when top of search and product page behave nothing alike.
  4. Reading PCA on the same day-one ROI as PLA; give context ads three to four weeks and watch branded search volume too.
  5. Skipping negative keywords on PCA because it "is not a search ad". It still triggers on keywords.

If you would rather have an ex-Flipkart team decide the split, our marketplace ads management service runs PLA and PCA together and reports on both against your real margin.

FAQ

Is PLA or PCA better on Flipkart? PLA for capturing search demand and for any listing without ad history; PCA for cross-sell, competitor pages, regional targeting and brand launches. Most sellers should run PLA first and add PCA once PLA holds a stable ROI.

What is the minimum budget for Flipkart PCA? Flipkart publishes no floor. Agency guides that reproduce the ad manager put PCA at ₹1,000 a day or ₹1,000 total, against ₹300 to ₹500 a day quoted for PLA. Seller Hub shows the current floor at setup.

Does PCA need a separate creative? Yes. PCA offers auto, rich, interactive and video creatives; auto creative needs only three 800 by 800 images and two titles. PLA uses your listing tile and needs no creative.

Can I target by location on Flipkart Ads? Only on PCA, which also supports device and related-store targeting. PLA targets by keyword or automatically.

How many keywords can I add? PCA caps at 100 keywords per campaign in exact or phrase match. Agency guides quote up to 200 negative keywords on PLA. Flipkart has not published a PLA positive-keyword cap.

Where do PCA ads appear? Top of search, rest of search, top of browse, rest of browse and on product pages below the add-to-cart button. PLA also appears on the homepage.

Getting the split right

PLA and PCA are not competitors for the same rupee; one buys intent and the other buys context. Put the first rupees into PLA, watch the placement and search-term reports weekly, and open PCA when you have reviews, images and a creative worth showing. Our marketplace ads management team does exactly that for brands, alongside listings and account health.
