Business Bank Account for UAE E-commerce: Document Checklist by Entity Type and What Online Sellers Need From the Account

By Blooprint team · Published 10 October 2026 · 7 min read

Key takeaways

  • Mashreq's published checklist asks an LLC for a trade license, MOA, Emirates IDs, address proof, three months of bank statements as source of funds and signatory CVs.
  • If the MOA does not give the signatory power to open, operate and close an account, Mashreq requires a board resolution. Check this clause before you apply.
  • Mashreq's NEO BIZ Pro is only for businesses owned 100% by individuals, with no layered structures. A holding-company owner needs the full layered-entity pack instead.
  • Online sellers should open an AED current account with an AE IBAN in the company name. Shopify Payments, for one, rejects savings, flex-currency and wire-only accounts.

To open a UAE business bank account for an e-commerce company you need, at minimum, your trade license, your memorandum of association (MOA), Emirates IDs for resident shareholders and signatories, proof of address and evidence of where the money comes from. Mashreq's published guidelines list exactly this set for an LLC, and add a board resolution when the MOA does not give the signatory banking powers. Other banks vary. None of the sources we opened publishes a universal list or an approval timeline, and only Mashreq's NEO BIZ sheet gives balance and fee figures. This page gives the checklist, the seller-specific account rules, and what to ask each bank. For a wider view of options, see our UAE business bank account guide for sellers.

What documents do UAE banks ask for?

The table below is Mashreq's own checklist by entity type, from its account-opening guidelines PDF dated November 2024. Use it as a benchmark, then ask your bank for its current list.

Document Sole establishment LLC
Trade license Yes Yes
MOA and amendments, if any Yes Yes
Board resolution (only if the MOA lacks open, operate and close powers) Not applicable Yes, if needed
Emirates ID for resident shareholders and signatories Yes Yes
Address proof (Ejari, tenancy agreement) Yes Yes
Source of funds: latest 3 months of bank statements (company, another entity of the UBO, or the shareholder) Yes Yes
Profile or CV of signatories and shareholders Yes Yes

The same guidelines say the account is open to any UAE company with a valid trade license, and to freelancers with a freelancer permit. Mashreq says it does not offer business accounts to crypto currency businesses.

Check this first. Read the banking clause in your MOA. If it does not say the signatory can "open, operate and close" a bank account, you will need a board resolution, and a missing one is a common reason for sent-back applications.

What if you have no office or a flexi-desk?

E-commerce companies often run from a flexi-desk or co-working space. Mashreq's guidelines say the company must still show proof of address, and that entities using flexi-desks, co-working or shared offices can provide the authorised signatory's UAE residence address proof or a power of attorney. Mashreq also allows address proof to be submitted within 90 days of account opening.

If you are still choosing a zone, see what license you need to sell online in the UAE, because the license you hold decides what the bank asks next.

What if your Emirates ID or license is not ready?

Mashreq says an authorised signatory can apply with a declaration to provide the Emirates ID within 90 days. It opens accounts for companies still under formation case by case, if you can provide valid under-formation documents issued by the licensing authority. Mashreq also says at least one partner who is the authorised signatory should hold a valid UAE residence visa. Do not assume other banks offer the same relief. Ask each one.

What if a company owns your company?

Many sellers hold their UAE company through a holding company or a foreign company. Mashreq calls this a layered entity and asks, for the corporate shareholder: a certificate of incorporation, MOA and articles including amendments, a share certificate if applicable, an incumbency certificate issued within the last year (if the company is more than a year old), a notarised board resolution or power of attorney, and passport copies of all ultimate beneficial owners and signatories. If the first-layer company is outside the UAE, its constitutional documents must be attested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in its home country and in the UAE.

This adds paperwork, and attestation in two countries takes time; Mashreq does not publish a timeline for it. If you can, hold the shares personally for simplicity, and take tax and legal advice before you restructure.

Which account type does an online seller need?

Whatever bank you pick, ask for an AED current (checking) account in the company name with an IBAN starting AE. Shopify Payments, for example, pays out only to a checking account at a UAE bank in AED, with an AE IBAN, eligible for domestic and international transfers. For an LLC it must be in the business name, and savings, wire-only, flex-currency and money transfer accounts are not supported. Shopify also wants proof of bank account issued within the past six months.

Other gateways and marketplaces set their own payout rules, so ask each one which account type it accepts. Shopify also requires two-step authentication on the store account that receives payouts. If you plan to sell on Shopify, check the full Shopify Payments UAE rules; Tabby says merchants receive the full amount "in days" but publishes no schedule, so confirm which account it pays and when; see the Tabby merchant guide and Tamara merchant guide.

Is a digital business account enough?

Mashreq's NEO BIZ Pro is a digital option. Its key facts sheet, last modified 7 September 2026, says the business must be owned 100% by individuals, and that no layered structures are allowed. The same sheet (version September 2026) lists the monthly average balance as nil, a monthly fee of AED 99 + VAT for NEO BIZ Pro and AED 199 + VAT for NEO BIZ Pro Plus, and says at least one partner or power of attorney on the account must be a UAE resident. Other charges are on the bank's fee page at mashreq.com/neobiz-soc.

Minimum balances, monthly fees and approval times differ between banks and change often. We could not verify them from a primary source for any other bank, so we are not quoting figures. Ask each bank for its current schedule of charges in writing, including the fee if your balance falls below the required average.

How should you compare banks as an e-commerce seller?

Ask each bank the same questions, and write the answers down:

  1. Does it open accounts for your license activity and your ownership structure, including a free zone company or a layered structure?
  2. What is the minimum or average balance, and what is the fee if you fall below it?
  3. Can you apply remotely, and what is the realistic time to an active IBAN?
  4. Does it issue the proof of bank account letter Shopify, marketplaces and gateways ask for?
  5. Is there a multi-currency option, and what are the conversion charges?
  6. Does it work with your payment gateway or BNPL provider for settlements?
  7. What happens to the account if turnover is lower than the bank expected?

Match your answers against payment gateway options in the UAE before you commit.

What goes wrong when sellers open accounts?

  • License activity does not match what you sell. Banks read the activity; a vague or mismatched one invites questions.
  • No clear source of funds. Prepare the statements Mashreq's checklist names.
  • MOA missing banking powers, so a board resolution is needed.
  • Layered ownership that nobody planned for.
  • Opening the account last. Marketplace and gateway onboarding both ask for bank details, so start the account the day the license is issued.

FAQ

What documents do I need to open a business bank account for my online store in the UAE? Mashreq's checklist for an LLC lists a trade license, MOA with amendments, Emirates IDs for resident shareholders and signatories, address proof, three months of bank statements for source of funds and signatory profiles. A board resolution is added if the MOA lacks banking powers. Other banks differ.

Can I open a UAE business account before my Emirates ID arrives? At Mashreq, yes: the authorised signatory can apply with a declaration to provide the Emirates ID within 90 days. Whether another bank allows this is a question for that bank.

Can a freelancer or sole establishment open a business account? Mashreq says freelancers with a freelancer permit can open a business account, and its checklist has a column for sole establishments. Requirements and approval remain at the bank's discretion.

Do I need a physical office to open a business account? Banks want proof of address. Mashreq accepts the signatory's UAE residence proof or a power of attorney for flexi-desk and co-working companies, and allows address proof within 90 days of account opening.

What bank account does Shopify Payments need in the UAE? An AED checking account at a UAE bank with an IBAN starting AE, in the business name for LLCs. Savings, wire-only, flex-currency and money transfer accounts are not supported. Shopify also asks for proof of bank account issued within six months.

Is there a bank account with no minimum balance? Mashreq's NEO BIZ key facts sheet (September 2026) lists the monthly average balance as nil, with a monthly fee of AED 99 + VAT for NEO BIZ Pro. We could not verify minimum balances for other banks from primary sources, so ask each bank for its schedule of charges in writing.

Can a company that owns my company open an account? Yes, but the bank asks for more documents: incorporation certificate, constitutional documents, an incumbency certificate, a notarised resolution or POA and the UBOs' passports. Foreign first-layer documents need attestation in both countries.
