Flipkart is the largest home-grown marketplace in India and, since its 2025 and 2026 fee changes, the cheapest large platform for products under Rs 1,000 and for fashion. It is also less transparent than Amazon: the full rate card sits behind the seller login, and several fee lines are published only as structures, not rupees. This guide covers registration, GST, the pickup address, your first listing, the three fulfilment models, what the fees look like on a real order, the Bronze to Gold tier system and how to run a first Product Listing Ad. Numbers come from Flipkart's own seller pages and 2026 press where available, checked as of September 2026, and are marked where they are third-party estimates. For the fee detail see our Flipkart seller fees guide; to model a product use the Flipkart seller calculator.

What do you need to register on Flipkart?
Registration is free and happens at seller.flipkart.com. Flipkart promises "Onboarding in just 10 minutes"; Unicommerce's walkthrough of the flow, which matches what we see in practice, lists eight steps:
- Click Start Selling, enter your mobile number, verify the OTP, then add an email address.
- Enter your GSTIN, or a PAN if you will sell only books.
- Create a password (eight characters with upper case, lower case and a special character).
- Verify the email through the link Flipkart sends.
- Add a signature, either auto-generated or drawn; it prints on your invoices.
- Enter your store name, a short description, and the pin code and full address of your pickup location.
- Enter bank account number and IFSC; the account name must match the GSTIN records.
- Create your first listing.
Documents to keep ready: PAN, GST certificate, a cancelled cheque or bank statement, and for a proprietorship a government photo ID and address proof; for a company the incorporation certificate and company PAN; for a partnership or LLP the deed or LLP certificate. Approval is "usually 1 to 3 business days after successful document verification". Flipkart lists "19000+ serviceable pin codes" for delivery once you are live.
Do you need GST to sell on Flipkart?
Yes, for everything except books. Flipkart, like every e-commerce operator, collects TCS under GST, so it will not onboard a seller in a taxable category without a GSTIN. The GST registration also has to carry the pickup address as a place of business, and if you use Flipkart's warehouses you add each one as an additional place of business. Flipkart adds GST to its own fees; it does not state the rate on its public pages, but marketplace services are taxed at 18% in India and that is the rate to budget. A registered seller claims it back as input credit. See GST on marketplace fees for the mechanics.
How do you create your first listing?
In Seller Hub you choose Add New Listing, pick the vertical, and either match an existing product or create a new one. Flipkart identifies products by FSN (Flipkart Serial Number), its equivalent of Amazon's ASIN. A listing needs a title, description, brand, images on a plain background, price and MRP, HSN code, and the attributes Flipkart's category template demands: size, colour, material, dimensions, weight, model number and warranty. Flipkart's own guidance is to fill every attribute, because filters and search rely on them.
Some verticals and brands are gated. Selling a registered brand you do not own requires a brand authorisation letter or invoices; some categories need quality certificates. Flipkart also scores each listing on a listing quality score, and low-scoring listings get less visibility. If cataloguing 50 or 500 SKUs is the blocker, that is the first thing our Flipkart account management team does.
FBF, Smart Fulfilment or self-ship: which model should you start on?
Flipkart offers three routes:
| Model | Where stock sits | Who packs | Who delivers | What you pay |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Seller-fulfilled (non-FBF) | Your premises | You | Ekart collects and delivers | Commission, fixed fee, shipping fee by weight and zone, COD collection fee |
| FBF (Fulfilment by Flipkart) | Flipkart warehouse | Flipkart | Ekart | Same commission; lower fixed fee; FBF fees replace standard shipping; storage |
| Smart Fulfilment | Your warehouse, run to Flipkart's process | You | Ekart | Non-FBF fee structure with delivery promises closer to FBF |
Almost every new seller starts seller-fulfilled: no inbound consignment, no warehouse fees, and Flipkart's page confirms commission is "completely consistent" across FBF and non-FBF orders, so you lose nothing on commission by waiting. Move your fastest ten SKUs to FBF once you can predict weekly sales, because FBF listings get faster delivery promises and the fixed fee is lower. Our FBF guide covers onboarding and when it pays.
What does Flipkart charge, and what is left on a Rs 799 order?
Flipkart lists five fee components: commission, shipping fee, fixed fee, collection fee on COD orders, and GST on all of them. The published rules as of September 2026:
- Commission: 0% on any product priced below Rs 1,000 in any category; 0% on all fashion at any price since 8 July 2026; category rates (reported at 3% to 25%) on non-fashion items at Rs 1,000 and above, shown in your dashboard.
- Fixed fee: a per-item charge by price band and seller tier. Flipkart publishes the tier adjustments (Bronze pays Base Rate plus Rs 10, Gold pays Base Rate, Platinum up to Rs 30 less) but not the base rates; Unicommerce's 2026 sample quotes Rs 24 for Rs 500 to Rs 1,000 and Rs 47 above Rs 1,000.
- Shipping: free for local and zonal deliveries under 500 g; rupee rates for heavier or national shipments are not public.
- Collection fee: a percentage of order value on COD orders, not published.
- Penalties from 23 August 2026: Rs 30 per shipment missed on the dispatch-by date, Rs 60 per seller cancellation, Rs 90 for both. New sellers are exempt for three months.
Worked example, a Rs 799 kitchen item, 400 g, sold by a Bronze seller to a zonal address on a prepaid order:
| Line | Amount | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Commission | Rs 0 | Under Rs 1,000 |
| Fixed fee | Rs 34 | Rs 24 sample base rate plus Rs 10 Bronze surcharge (estimate) |
| Shipping | Rs 0 | Zonal, under 500 g |
| Collection fee | Rs 0 | Prepaid |
| GST at 18% | Rs 6.12 | On Rs 34 |
| Total deductions | Rs 40.12 | About 5% of price |
| Settlement | Rs 758.88 | Before product cost and returns |
The same item on COD to a national address adds a shipping fee and a collection fee, and both are set by your rate card, so the realistic range is Rs 40 to Rs 120 in deductions. Returns are the hidden line: reverse shipping on a customer return is charged, and on fashion it routinely exceeds what commission used to cost. Flipkart settles "within 7 business days after successful order delivery", faster for higher tiers.
How do Flipkart seller tiers work?
Every seller carries a tier, reviewed each quarter on the previous 90 days. Everyone starts at Bronze. Silver needs Rs 30 lakh in sales or 4,000 units in 90 days, seller cancellations under 0.50% and ready-to-dispatch breaches under 1.40%. Gold needs Rs 50 lakh or 6,000 units, cancellations under 0.15% and RTD breaches under 1%. Higher tiers get a lower fixed fee, faster settlement and priority support. For a new seller the practical lesson is that the volume threshold is out of reach for a quarter or two, but the cancellation and dispatch metrics are within your control from day one, and they are the same metrics Flipkart's penalties and account actions use. Our Flipkart account health guide covers each metric.
How do you run your first PLA campaign?
A new FSN has no sales history, so Flipkart's search gives it little organic placement. Product Listing Ads are cost-per-click ads that show your listing in search results, browse pages and on other product pages, and they are the standard way to get the first orders. You reach them from Advertising in Seller Hub or at ads.flipkart.com.
- Start with one Smart ROI campaign for your best five listings at Rs 300 to Rs 500 a day; Flipkart sets bids to hit the ROI target you enter. Set a modest target (say 3x) at launch to buy reach.
- After two weeks, move the listings that convert into a manual CPC campaign with keyword targeting, and use the search term data to add negatives.
- Judge on direct ROI, attributed revenue divided by spend, and on whether organic rank on your main keyword is improving.
Pair ads with a competitive price against other sellers on the same FSN, a launch offer, and fast dispatch, because delivery speed feeds ranking. The Flipkart ads guide goes into campaign structure and Big Billion Days planning.
What mistakes do new Flipkart sellers make?
- Registering with a bank account in a different name from the GSTIN, which stalls verification.
- Assuming 0% commission means 0% fees; the fixed fee, shipping, COD fee and GST still apply.
- Missing the dispatch-by date because nobody checks Seller Hub on a Saturday; from month four that is Rs 30 a shipment.
- Leaving category attributes blank, which drops the listing out of filters.
- Pricing fashion without a return allowance; reverse shipping is the largest cost on that vertical.
- Waiting for organic sales instead of running a small PLA campaign from week one.
FAQ
Is it free to register as a Flipkart seller? Yes. Registration and listing are free; Flipkart charges only on a successful sale, through commission (often 0%), the fixed fee, shipping and collection fees, plus GST.
Can I sell on Flipkart without GST? Only books, where PAN is accepted. Every other category requires a GSTIN at registration.
How long does Flipkart approval take? The form takes about 10 minutes and document verification usually 1 to 3 business days, provided the GST, PAN and bank names match.
What is Flipkart's commission in 2026? 0% on any product under Rs 1,000 and on all fashion. Non-fashion items at Rs 1,000 and above pay a category rate shown in your Seller Hub rate card; press reports put the range at 3% to 25%.
Should a new seller start with FBF? Usually not. Start seller-fulfilled, learn which SKUs move, then send those to FBF. Commission is identical either way, so you lose nothing by waiting.
When does Flipkart pay? Flipkart states payments are generally settled within 7 business days after successful delivery; higher seller tiers get shorter cycles.
