Supermarket Supplier Registration in the UAE: How to Get Listed at Carrefour and Other Chains, and What to Prepare

By Blooprint team ยท Published 10 October 2026 ยท 6 min read

Key takeaways

  • We found no public Carrefour UAE supplier form or published supplier terms on 9 October 2026, so the route is a buyer pitch followed by the chain's own supplier set-up.
  • Food items sold in Dubai need product registration with Dubai Municipality, which lists a service called Apply to Register and Assess a Food Item.
  • VAT registration is mandatory at AED 375,000 of taxable supplies and voluntary from AED 187,500, per the FTA page updated 6 April 2026.
  • Listing fees, rebates, payment terms and return rights are not published by chains. Ask for each in writing before you ship a first pallet.

To register as a supermarket supplier in the UAE, you first win a listing from the chain's buyer, and only then complete the chain's own supplier set-up. We found no public Carrefour UAE supplier form or published supplier terms when we looked on 9 October 2026, and the retailer's site did not load for our check, so we cannot quote its documents or fees. What you can control is the folder you bring: a licensed business, registered products, compliant labels, barcodes and a clear price list.

How does a supplier actually get onto a supermarket shelf?

The route is the same at most chains, and we describe it as a method, not as any one chain's rule.

  1. Reach the buyer. Buyers are organised by category: dairy, snacks, beverages, household. Find the category buyer through trade shows, your distributor or your network. A cold email with a range sheet can work, but a warm introduction works better.
  2. Win the listing decision. The buyer decides whether your product earns shelf space. They look at price position, brand strength, margin, packaging and supply reliability.
  3. Complete supplier set-up. After a yes, the chain's finance and supply teams create you as a vendor. Ask for the list of documents at the point of the yes, not before.
  4. Agree the commercial terms. Margin, payment terms, promotional contributions and return rights.
  5. Deliver to the right place. Distribution centre or stores, in the agreed window, with the right paperwork.

If you want to reach shoppers through the delivery apps rather than, or as well as, shelves, the talabat mart supplier guide and the Careem Quik and InstaShop guides cover that route.

Check this first. Do not pay anyone a "supplier registration fee" to be put in touch with a chain. We found no published fee for Carrefour UAE supplier registration. Ask the chain itself, in writing, before you pay a third party.

Which documents and registrations do you need?

For comparison, talabat's UAE partner portal lists a trade license, a tax certificate if applicable, an Emirates ID, a power of attorney if applicable and a trademark certificate if applicable. Chains publish few such lists, so this is the folder a careful buyer will usually ask for. Confirm each item with the chain.

Item Why a buyer asks Where to start
Trade license for import, wholesale or manufacture Proves you can legally sell UAE license overview
Product registration for each food item Proves the item may be sold Dubai Municipality (below)
Compliant labels Proves the pack can be sold Food label requirements
Halal certification where relevant Required in many categories Halal certificate guide
Barcode on every pack Needed for till and stock systems GS1 barcode guide
Tax registration number Needed for tax invoices FTA (below)
Bank details and a company stamp or signatory proof Needed for payment Your bank

For food in Dubai, Dubai Municipality's food-safety page lists services including "Apply to Register and Assess a Food Item". The page shows titles only and no fees. See the Dubai Municipality product registration guide for the process. Other emirates have their own authorities, which we did not check.

On tax, the mandatory VAT registration threshold is AED 375,000 and the voluntary threshold is AED 187,500, per the FTA page last updated 6 April 2026. A chain will normally want a tax invoice from you, so a VAT-registered supplier is easier to buy from. This is general information, not tax or legal advice. Confirm with the Federal Tax Authority.

What is the difference between a brand, an importer and a distributor?

The buyer wants to know who is accountable.

  • Brand owner. Owns the trademark and usually the registration. Can negotiate price directly.
  • Importer. Holds the import documents and often the registration in the UAE. Needs the brand owner's authorisation.
  • Distributor. Buys from the brand or importer and supplies the chain. The distributor holds the relationship, and takes a margin for it.

Dubai's 2020 home-business rules show how seriously the system treats traceability: supplier and service-provider details had to be registered on the Food Watch platform, and imported food had to be registered on the federal ZAD portal before import. That release is about one license category and is dated 2020, but it points at what chains will check: who made it, who imported it and who is responsible.

Which commercial terms should you ask about?

None of these are published by chains that we could read, so each is a question.

Question What to watch for
Is the sale outright, or sale or return? Return rights put the risk on you
What margin does the chain take, and on which price? Retail price or cost price changes your net
What payment terms apply, and when do they start? Longer terms need more working capital
Are there listing, promotion or shelf contributions? Often charged on top of margin
What fill rate is expected? See fill rate Penalties for short deliveries
What are the delivery windows and the purchase order process? Missed windows can be rejected
How are expiry and damage handled? The main hidden cost for food
Are exclusivity or price-parity clauses included? Can restrict your other channels

How do you check whether a listing pays?

Illustrative numbers only. Suppose your ex-factory price is AED 6.20 a unit including packaging and the chain sells it at AED 12.00. If the chain's margin were 30% of that price, which is an assumption for the arithmetic and not a chain's published rate, you would invoice AED 8.40. After AED 2.10 a unit for freight and handling to the chain, you keep AED 0.10 a unit over your AED 6.20 cost. Change the freight to AED 1.00 and you keep AED 1.20. A small change in logistics decides whether the line pays, so measure freight before you agree.

Then add working capital. If payment terms run 60 days and you ship AED 50,000 of goods a month, you carry about AED 100,000 of receivables at any time. Check that you can finance that.

FAQ

How do I register as a Carrefour supplier in the UAE? We found no public Carrefour UAE supplier registration form on 9 October 2026. Approach the category buyer with a range sheet, and ask at the point of agreement for the chain's supplier set-up documents and terms in writing.

Is there a fee to become a supermarket supplier? We found no published registration fee from any chain. Listing contributions, rebates and promotional charges exist in the trade, but you must ask each chain for its own. Never pay an intermediary a "registration fee" without the chain's confirmation.

Do I need a trade license to supply a supermarket? Yes in practice. A chain buys from a licensed business that can issue a tax invoice and be paid by bank transfer. The UAE license overview explains which license fits.

Can a small local brand get listed? It can, but chains do not publish minimum volumes. A small brand improves its chances with clean registrations, barcoded packs, a short range, reliable supply and a price that leaves the chain a margin. Ask about trial or regional listings.

Do I need Dubai Municipality approval for packaged food? For food sold in Dubai, Dubai Municipality lists a food-item registration service, and chains normally expect products to be registered. Confirm item by item, because we cannot say which products are exempt.

Does a home-licensed food business supply supermarkets? Under Dubai's Intelaq rules published in 2020, food trade activities allow the home as a management office only, with no storage or repackaging at home. See the home food guide.

Should I go through a distributor? Often it is the practical route, since the distributor already holds the buyer relationship and logistics. The cost is margin. Ask who holds product registration and who is accountable if a batch is withdrawn.
