The best product to sell online in the UAE is one you can legally sell, source at a landed cost that leaves a margin after marketplace fees, and ship without trouble. No UAE authority publishes a list of top-selling products, and we have no sourced demand figure, so this page gives you a five-test filter instead. Run every product idea through it before you buy stock. The fees and rules below are as of October 2026.

What to Sell Online in the UAE: A Five-Test Filter Using Approvals, Marketplace Fees, Customs and Brand Rules
By Blooprint team · Published 10 October 2026 · 6 min read
Key takeaways
- No authority publishes a list of best-selling products, so choose with tests you can check: approvals needed, marketplace fee, landed cost, brand gating and delivery rules.
- Dubai Municipality regulates cosmetics, fragrances, supplements, detergents, biocides, food contact items and toys, so these categories need registration before you sell.
- Amazon.ae referral fees range widely by category: for example 5% on Mobile Phones, 7% on Consumer Electronics, 14% on Toys and 15% on Home, Kitchen and Apparel.
- Standard Dubai import duty is 5% of CIF value, and cross-border e-commerce goods up to AED 1,000 can be duty-exempt from 3 August 2026 under Customs Notice 16/2026.

What is the five-test filter?
- Approval test. Does the product need registration or approval before sale?
- Fee test. What does the marketplace take, in AED, on your selling price?
- Landed cost test. What does the product cost once duty, freight and VAT are added?
- Brand test. Is the brand gated or the category approval-only?
- Delivery test. Can couriers carry it, and what do returns cost?
A product that fails test 1 or 4 is a poor first product, even if the margin looks good.
Which products need approval before you can sell them?
Dubai says online traders must refrain from selling any goods or services that need special approval until they have it. Dubai Municipality (DM) lists its regulated consumer product categories as cosmetics and personal care, fragrances, detergents, biocides, health supplements, food contact materials and toys. Each product needs registration in Montaji, and DM fines importing an unregistered, spoiled or expired consumer product AED 1,000 per product.
Amazon.ae adds its own "Approval Requiring Categories" and says you can request approval through Seller Central. It also has a prohibited products list. Read Amazon.ae restricted products and category approval.
| If you plan to sell | Expect | Guide |
|---|---|---|
| Perfume and oud | DM registration of each product and variant | Sell perfume online |
| Cosmetics | DM registration and a compliant label | Sell cosmetics online |
| Supplements | DM or federal registration | Sell supplements online |
| Electronics | TDRA and conformity checks | Sell electronics online |
| Food | Food registration and labelling rules | Sell food products online |
| Toys | DM registration (toys are regulated) | Sell toys online |
| Abayas and clothing | Usually no product registration | Sell abayas online |
The "Expect" column is a summary of where to look, not an approval checklist. Open the linked guide for the sourced rules.
What do marketplaces take from each category?
Amazon.ae publishes its referral fees by category on its pricing page, with a minimum of AED 1 on most lines. A sample, as of October 2026:
| Category | Amazon.ae referral fee |
|---|---|
| Mobile Phones | 5% |
| Consumer Electronics | 7% |
| Small Appliances | 13% |
| Toys | 14% |
| Home, Kitchen, Apparel, Shoes | 15% |
| Perfumes | 15%, or 13% with FBA |
| Jewelry | 16% up to AED 1,000, then 5% above |
| Grocery | 5% up to AED 50, then 11% above |
The fee is only one cost. Our Amazon.ae seller fees guide and referral fees by category cover the rest, and best marketplaces to sell in the UAE compares channels.
How do you work out landed cost?
Add the supplier price, freight, customs duty, VAT and clearance. The standard Dubai duty rate is 5% of CIF value, with alcohol at 50% and tobacco at 100%. Import VAT is calculated on the value including any customs duty. Dubai Customs Notice 16/2026 exempts goods valued up to AED 1,000 from customs duty for cross-border e-commerce from 3 August 2026, and says companies wishing to benefit must bring their operations into line with it; Dubai Customs registers and enrols e-commerce companies on its platform. See customs duty in the UAE and importing from China.
A worked example, with illustrative inputs: a kitchen item costs AED 18 ex-factory, AED 4 freight and AED 1 clearance per unit. At 5% duty on CIF of AED 22 (supplier price plus freight; insurance ignored), duty is AED 1.10, so landed cost before VAT is about AED 24.10. If it sells for AED 80 on Amazon.ae, the 15% Kitchen referral fee is AED 12, leaving about AED 43.90 before VAT, fulfilment, returns and advertising.
Does the marketplace you choose change the product choice?
Yes. A marketplace sets its own approvals, fees and seller eligibility. noon, for example, accepts a valid trade license with Sales, Trading, Manufacturing or Distribution/Wholesale activity, while Amazon.ae has its approval-requiring categories. Check both before you commit to a category, and compare them in best marketplaces to sell in the UAE. If a product needs approval on one marketplace and not on the other, start where you can list it sooner and learn from real orders.
Which categories carry brand and counterfeit risk?
Branded goods in electronics, fragrance, beauty and fashion. noon's counterfeit penalty starts at AED/SAR 200,000 and can include delisting, account revocation and legal action. Amazon.ae brand owners can enrol in Brand Registry. If you cannot show a clean supplier chain, avoid the brand or choose an unbranded product. Online arbitrage on Amazon.ae explains the invoice issue, and private label perfume shows what owning a brand involves.
How do you test a product before you commit?
Treat the first batch as an experiment with a written pass mark. Before you buy, write down the selling price, the marketplace fee, the landed cost and the margin you need. Order a small batch from one supplier and ask for a tax invoice. List the product on one marketplace only. Track returns, damage and delivery complaints as well as sales, because a product that sells but comes back is not working. If the margin falls below your pass mark after fees, stop and change the product, not the maths. A second product tested the same way teaches you more than a catalogue of fifty untested lines.
Which products are hard to deliver?
Couriers restrict some goods, including perfume, aerosols and lithium batteries; the carrier rules are in ship perfume and batteries in the UAE. Bulky items cost more to ship and return, and cash on delivery adds failed-delivery cost; see cash on delivery for UAE sellers.
Check this first. Choose a product you can describe in one sentence and test with one supplier before you build a catalogue. A narrow start makes approvals, invoices and returns manageable.
Where do you find product ideas?
Start with what you can source and prove. Look at category pages on Amazon.ae and noon, check which items have few reviews or poor images, and test supply from Dragon Mart or Dubai wholesale markets.
FAQ
What sells best online in the UAE? No official source publishes a best-seller list, so we do not give one. Use the five tests to choose: approval, fee, landed cost, brand gating and delivery. Marketplace category pages show what already sells, but check each product's rules.
What can I not sell online in the UAE? Goods that need special approval you do not yet have, goods on Amazon.ae's prohibited list, and anything counterfeit. Dubai tells traders to refrain from selling goods that need special approval until obtained.
Do I need a license to sell online in the UAE? Yes, for a business. Dubai mainland online sellers apply through DET, and all eTrader licenses require TDRA approval or an NOC. See what license you need.
Which Amazon.ae category has the lowest fee? Of the lines we checked, Mobile Phones and the lower Grocery band are 5%. A low fee does not mean a better margin, since electronics prices are tight and approvals may apply. Compare the whole cost.
Is it better to sell my own brand or resell? Resale is faster but exposes you to gating and counterfeit rules. Your own brand needs product work, registration and trade mark protection. Neither is better in general; compare your capital, time and approvals.
Can I start with a small budget? Yes. A trade license, a test batch and a seller account are the first costs; fees for the license are listed in UAE e-commerce license cost. No source gives a typical total, so build your own from quotes.
What to do next
Pick three product ideas, run them through the five tests on paper, and discard any that fail on approvals or brand. When one passes, Amazon.ae account management is where Blooprint can take over setup, listings and advertising. For the full route, read how to start an online business in Dubai.
